hello,

B125 shows with handrails and B131 without in the description but photos show it the other way around, which is correct?

Pictures tell a thousand stories, so would go with that!

They had started repainting them in black'n'tan as early as 1964, and therefore before they were all fitted with full-length handrails. Thus, it was possible to find black'n'tan ones both with and without full handrails. Same with the little sand-filler jobbies on the nose ends.

Thanks jhb, the pics could be of pre production models so wasn't sure which was correct.

also, is 132 Supertrain or IE?

According to Hatton, 132 is in CIE Supertrain livery.

I think B131 handrail or not question is becoming like the third secret of Fatima at this stage . We may have to get the pope to intervene.

Presumably this depends on what the prototype had fitted?

All of the 121 class would have received Catwalk handrails in the early 1970’s , fitting them for MU(Multiple Unit) working would take longer B121 being first (1973) , B134 second (1974/75) B131 was fitted for MU in late 1975 so the model is spot on , B125 was not fitted for MU  working  while in Black and Tan , it was the last 121 fitted with MU equipment in 1978 and by that stage it  was in Supertrain livery so again the model is spot on .

While on the subject of handrails the 141, 181, and 071 class came built with EMD catwalk handrails , the catwalk handrails on the 121 were made in house by the staff at  Inchicore works so they are different  this is another fine detail that Paddy Murphy has got captured perfectly on these models  well done again Paddy .

That would be an ecumenical matter.....

--------------

All of the 121s had no handrails once repainted from grey to black'n'tan, but during the currency of that livery gained them. While the livery officially changed to "Supertrain" in 1972, black'n'tan ones would still remain in traffic for a few years more - with handrails.

I am unaware of any being repainted into "Supertrain" livery still without full handrails. The first time I saw repainted ones, they had them - and the pair (on the front of a Cork train of Mk 2s about to leave Heuston) were both straight out of the paint shop.

And I had just used up all my film on an "E" class, and two "H" vans in the goods yard.............

Presumably therefore the grey/yellow model should have no other buffer beam detail than the vacuum pipe, the black/tan would only have additional hoses added later and Supertrain would have the full array?

Some of the 121 class were operating in Supertrain livery with no MU connections notably 122,123,125, 132 & 133,there may have been more , by 1978 following the conversion of 125 all Supertrain locos would carry the full array of pipework and MU sockets at that stage .
