Irish Finescale Tony Miles Adavoyle P4-21mm gauge
Galteemore replied to Mayner's topic in Irish Model Layouts
Tony was an incredible modeller - I think he’d been exposed to Irish railways via service in WW2, and he applied military precision to his modelling. I didn’t know him but my dad always spoke highly of him. Like JIC Boyd, a very committed Christian man and I think a lay preacher to boot. Don’t know if - as Boyd did - he carried a surplice on all his travels so he could join in worship with the local parish choir! -

Amazing models in that you can actually buy a P4 RTR version / great way into Finescale -
7 1/4 INCH GAUGE GSR 800 CLASS MAÉDB REPLICA

That’s very impressive Callum. In terms of inflation and material costs it will probably work out on a par with building the original!! Will be a fabulous tribute to the original. -

I was composing just such an answer! As a veteran of 4 Alphagraphix loco kits I quite concur.

Ok. Let’s haul it back. Major customer of DC was Clarks Mill, which of course had its own tramway. Sir George Clark served in British Army throughout WW2. Ulster’s fabric industry has long supplied the UK armed forces, and the soldiers above are almost certainly wearing uniforms produced under aegis of Cooneen Fabrics, based outside Fivemiletown. However tangential, there’s a link…..;)

Indeed. It’s a classic Irish irony that the most frequent appearance of F-A-B is in the British Army!

Was taken over by SL and used for a bit. MGWR also had a loco of same name, and ‘Erin Go Bragh “. Irish language underwent something of revival in late c19th, and this was presumably a by-product of that.

Interesting that NG dominates the Irish modelling scene when fidelity to gauge is the criterion. Possibly due to fact that it requires less space and stock, and has always been easier to acquire RTR mechs and chassis (12mm for 4mm modellers and 16.5 for those who model in 5.5mm). The WCR has never grabbed me either for some reason.

Roger makes a 7mm kit which also means he has working scale drawing which might help you …he’s very amenable…..

Yes that’s most interesting. Wonder if it would have been enough to save - what to me anyway - are the most interesting parts of the system - the lines to Peel and Ramsey. The former perhaps, the latter almost certainly not.

That depends on whether you enjoy drinking oil or applying it as a lubricant Loco tea mugs tend to be white enamel. The colours may denote different grades of oil. For certain high temp applications, for instance, you need to use heavy grade steam oil which won’t separate under heat. A memory from my days in 16mm live steam when we used heavy oil for cylinder lubing and light oil for bearings.

Wow x 3. What a treat. Beautiful little engine which runs as nicely as she looks. Well done indeed!! Backheads are interesting, and I think you’ll get away with this one. They are often far more dull and unobtrusive in real life than modellers portray them (inc myself before I took the trouble to look at the real thing). This is one of my pics of 131 last year. Note how dull and non-shiny it is. None of the bright red and brass fittings we often see modelled……and as for out of scale gauge, your craftsmanship distracts away from that.

Thanks John. I’m just finishing off my first ever 4-4-0 and have already found that I need to boost the front spring to lift the frames off the bogie. I’ve built a weighted tender as per Sharman. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out….
-
They were rather niche. Would also have presented some significant modelling problems. Small 4-4-0s can be problematic to motorise and balance - even in 7mm you may not get away with a conventional motor gearbox combo. The GN J-class, for instance, requires a rather expensive 3-stage set of gears from ABC as pictured. Belpaire boilers make life a little easier but a round-topped firebox rather limits your wiggle room.

Lovely ! Also shows importance of having a crew on a tender loco. You can get off without them on a tank loco or BR standard because it’s so dark in there but less so with an open cab tender engine. Those two look very good
-
Yet another reason to distrust the NCC - that Courtaulds place in Carrick is turning out artificial fabric by the ton. With its own sidings and two tank engines too!!!

That’s how she came off eBay. Thankfully I have spares. She also needs a few other things but I won’t derail your thread. Did I glimpse Mr Weaver at one point?

There’s also historical backing for peripatetic Us. 197 Lough Neagh made it as far as Mountmellick in 1960. Pic on IRRS Flickr

Fabulous - I figured someone must have had pics of the event !
