Ssshhhh Sure sound chipped dcc locos are only about 50!euro! ( looks around nervously in case SWMBO is reading! )

The Hornby Select is a good entry level controller, Bachmann also have an 'EZ" dcc unit that I used previously for the kids (as it had ten buttons for loco addresses). It's definitely the way to go either way, and you can still run the DC locos (one at a time) on the DCC layout/
