  2. I'd concur with C-Rail recommendation. The models seem to be high quality and I have some of the 20ft Bells and a few others. You could mix 20ft Bells with each other or with some nicely weathered CIE 20ft. You've got four to play with in a single IRM pack, and any spares would sit very nicely on any reasonable version of a a 20ft chassis in a mixed freight rake or just sitting in the freight yard by itself) You could throw win a Bell reefer or two and if you wanted to modify your contained just stick a white roof on one or two 40ft. They don't have any of the small B&I as far as I know. Seem to have been a reasonable few of the freighliner red/whote and red/yellow containers in the 70s. For more modern era lots of other containers and tanktainers that I know very little of plus Maersk, P&O which I like personally but I don't know how many of the letters ran on Irish metals.   3. The 47' wagons were constructed for Guinness traffic in the very late 70s. Was the majority of bogie liner traffic prior to mid 1990s on the 47' wagons (and not on the 42' flats)? What were the dimensions keg cage? I find it difficult to tell 42s from 47s on a rake of wagons. Could the 47' only take 6 pallets whereas the 42' flats could take six? The 4 wheelers used seem to be able to carry three on presumably a 14' wheelbase. What was being used for keg transport prior to the introduction of the 47' flats?
  4. Speaking of keg liners, while we refer to them as Guinness liners, some of the transported kegs were for other companies such as Murphy's (albeit with a small market share relative to Guinness). These are labelled as 'Guinness kegs' but one can clearly see the banded ones (on the near right, at least) at the North Esk location in Cork are embossed with Whitbread, one of the successors that purchased the Murphy's brand. The silver kegs in the background may well all belong to Guinness reflecting its superior share of the stout market!
  5. I didn't get any of these as I'd prefer to get etc original livery in blue. What's the purpose of the drawbar? I watched the video but they did not appear to be coupled very closely with the bar (or is it closer than the NEM TL couplers?) Is there a cosmetic instanter coupling to attach to the hook (which of course are visible in either scenario drawbar or TLs)?

  7. The colorful spring and other bogie parts are a very recent detail and were not present on any photos of 1970s wagons even when new and unweathered. They would be correct for the spoil wagons of the present century as Fran has indicated above We're down to the last Pack B of Bell continers, all Pack A and CIE containers are gone, just the 20+ packs of B&I container flats left (containers which are not available anywhere else , that I'm aware of)
  8. True. I realize there's not a lot you can do with wild animals which I suppose obliges IE to protect itself in that regard in any case. Fencing heights relative to the surrounding terrain would have to be significant to keep deer off the line. Deer in your radiator or a big Red in your windscreen isn't a lot of fun, saw that in Scotland a few times. Deer tend to be semi-nocturnal which might account for a an in creased number of strikes in the winter months when services operate for longer without daylight. Cattle of course aren't quite as wary or agile as deer unlike the West of Ireland sheep.
  9. Oh, yes K801. I understand you now. Did the MK2 EGVs have any luggage capacity? The old 4 wheeler heating vans did and I'm pretty sure that most GSVs did.

What I found most 'interesting' is the requirement for IE to secure its existing (for over a century) right of way and its liability when an animal (which should be secured by its owner) wanders onto its tracks. It would be hard to find another party at fault under these laws. So in addition to any repairs, it has to reimburse the owner of the animals. However, do passengers on IE have any right to compensation for delays and consequential losses even in theory? Is a motorist similarly liable or is that the roads authority? I can understand how when a new road/motorway is built there would be an obligation to secure it from animals if it cuts through existing farmland etc. As for motorists infringing on the IE shared right of way at LCs with more than sufficient warning with lights, barriers, signage, fireworks etc. The mind boggles ......

  12. It used to be leaves, and poor animals deliberately tied to the line on the approach to Glanmire Road north of the tunnel. Poor animals and poorer owners!

  22. Not sure if there is a main thread on the BGH but there hasn't been much discussion about it on the site since its inception (other than photographic updates, of course). I was just wondering how this venture is faring overall in terms of appeal, sales, passenger numbers, future viability or anything else relevant?
