  1. The Fiddle Yard on Whiteacres is something else, 65+ trains lined up
  2. Patrick - stop getting your knickers in a twist over anything/everything I say about the Fry Model Railway. To bring back an old saying of mine on the previous forums - if you dont like what I have to say dont read it. Your status as the moral guardian on here is starting to grate a little. It obviously meant that much to you that you had to type out the above. So what if I dont follow the line on here, its been revealed that it never made a profit - ever so the fact it lasted so long where it was says a little about the bean counters, a bit of concern (or luck) ensured the collection was safely stored away. Thats about all and I typed in a few paragraphs too. Why not open up the toolbox and do a little modelling. Its why we are all here ultimately. Its the main reason Ive typed this in the small hours
  3. Wait until something happens - still. Im sure when my local TD knocks on the door they will be unaware of it. Its another one to be filed under 'Only in Ireland'. Sometimes its hard to be a realist but read a comment of mine earlier in this thread and you will see that I got an inside view of the previous operation Cheers for that, Eoin!
  4. If it it happens great is my outlook. Im just not wholly convinced. More important things for local government to fix first
  5. Believe it when it happens - as in when the ribbon is cut and it is declared officially open
  6. Thank You, hardly 'my' layout as a team of 20 people contributed to it. Will have plenty of photos and video footage by the end of the weekend too
  7. That was my 1st Warley. Still managed to enjoy it
  8. Go on Sunday to avoid the the crowds Will be heading over in the early hours of Thursday morning with O'Connell Street, lets see if we return with a Trophy....
  9. How many were made RTR?
  10. What percentage of that price is 'sentimental value'
  11. You get what you pay for. At least with these its excellent quality and materials
  12. If there was enough of a market for that in RTR then there would be. Most would not want it or not be willing to pay for it.
  13. Hope its a big bag!! Love some myself! RTR is most of the time down to cost. The quality has improved greatly in the last 10-15 years Scratchbuilt is down or up to a certain level - the modellers level If something thats RTR is not up to a certain standard people will complain. We are past the stage of 'OMG Irish RTR models' if it is not good enough people will make this known. There have been plenty of disgruntled British outline modellers when certain high profile and expensive models have not met expectations and this has forced the manufacturer to alter the product. This needs to happen here. If its a kit you can make it to your own standard. My MIR 111's had the majority of the whitemetal parts staying in the box and at least half of the resin on the body being removed. Built to my standard and a lot of people liked it There is a very clear split visible on this thread......those who enjoy collecting and operating models and those who strive for better. Each has their own view but me being in the latter camp I will always want more. For €100 RTR I want the right colour, correct detail, flush glazing, injection moulded plastic and free running - at the very least. Ive found little things that can be done to any Murphy Models loco and make a vast improvement in appearance. Making the best better... From the opinions Im getting the new IRM ballast wagons could have been 3d printed and sold in equally good numbers Ill respect the moderators wishes for a fair argument and not get personal but some people here really need to get a grip.
  14. Give us all a break, your preaching to the converted You will will find that 30 years ago and before, like now people sat down and made what was not available, often to a very high standard. They didnt just make do. They wanted better and they got it.
  15. For that money Id want something that is not 3D printed and has flush glazing along with correct decoration. For that money you could buy 2 MM Cravens. Time for people to vote with their feet. So what if it is Irish and RTR. Its wrong and people need to speak up and not embrace it cos its Irish and therefore flawless
  16. Between Booterstown and Blackrock station theres one right beside the line. Not sure what its used for now but was a changing facility for the football pitch in the park at Blackrock. Climbed the steps to the top a few times. Very cramped and tight steps in them originally too
  17. As already stated - 40 shades of orange No doubt there were a few bathrooms painted CIE/IR/IE orange around Inchicore over the years - 5 litres of thinners replacing 5 litres of paint.....
  18. Hopefully you made your suggestions clearly to the sdmrc on the day.
  19. As outlined above and also NIR expanded the fleet when they bought 111,112 and 113. They needed an extra set of coaches
  20. Ill outline a few reasons why its rarely seen at Irish Exhibitions, as someone who has sat on organising committees. Some examples might be seen as extreme but everything needs to be taken into account. Its not just how one person might see it Space - its limited. Would you rather see a very high standard layout or a table selling weak tea, cold coffee and stale scones and sandwiches Litter - besides discarded cups and wrappers, droppages and spillages are not needed. Given todays litigation society, a discarded sandwich or spilled coffee is seen as bad as the proverbial banana skin Health and safety - your in a public place and often in an area that is not being used for its intended purpose. Is there a risk assessment for that coffee machine on top of that school desk? What happens if its proven people got food poisoning after the same knives/chopping board was used for both raw meat and cooked meat? Some voluntary weekend staff might forget they are making food for public consumption Staff/Resources - most shows in Ireland provide catering for the exhibitors only. Sometimes this is provided by the organising club and it could be the other halves of members. Occasionally a catering company will be brought in. Often the resources are not there. Mrs O'Reilly makes lovely sandwiches and scones but she might end up giving you the wrong change without the slightest notion. She might not be used to dealing with complaints either. Also voluntary catering staff cant be expected to work all day The Market here does not require catering. Plenty of shops and restaurants near the vicinity of the show. Blackrock is 2 mins up the road In short - the demand is not there, not to mention everything Ive outlined above
  21. 31st of February is the big announcement
  22. The Dapol Esso tank wagons are not a million miles off
  23. Well this is certainly better than some questions that are asked here. To answer your questions: 1 - None that Im aware of, publicly at least. The only model that would fit into this is the MRSI's O'Connell Street and this is based in 1949 when the trams ran along O'Connell Street for the last time as the trams in Dublin closed. There were no Trams on the streets Dublin between 1949 and 2004 when the LUAS Green line opened. The one exception is the Hill of Howth tramway which closed in 1959, but this was more of a rural tramway 2. In the 1960's if you wanted finescale you made it all yourself or paid someone else to make it for you. Given your surgeon is good with his hands he would have trust in them. An excellent modeller friend of mine is a floor fitter by trade and has a stanley knife in his hand almost the entire time. His skills with cutting and sculpting when modelling are second to none. Hence your surgeon would be a fine modeller and a perfectionist. Mass produced models were quite rudimentary until relatively recent times when massive advances in injection moulding and computer design became common and cheap. In the 1960's you would make everything yourself. Its closed now, but the Fry Models collection would have shown you this perfectly - more or less everything was made by hand
  24. Trains are to be played with. People are always amazed when they see repaints, weathering conversions etc. Sold off most of my collectible stuff to gullible folk and made a few quid in the process!!
  25. An ITG railtour brought Cravens to Bangor in 1997
