She hasn't worked for over 50 years. She’s probably be too heavy on coal to make her economic to run there. It’s just 2 miles or so to Inch Abbey but to just light up a loco like that is £100+ of coal. If a typical loading was five packed bogies you’d recoup that but not with normal passenger numbers. But how economical would a locomotive like that run on say runs to maynooth and back or short runs ect. Quote
Galteemore Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 (edited) The Sligo tanks had a reputation for being heavy on coal. They are not passenger locos (90% of SLNC passenger traffic was diesel by time of their arrival in 51) but designed for the hard slog of hauling 25 wagons of cattle over a badly laid 45 mile long rollercoaster. The UTA never used them, even when less than a decade old, for anything other than freight in regular service. 131 is ideal for the RPSI’s Dublin runs with the necessary grunt and acceleration- arguably a U would be even better ….if only we had one! No worse than a J15, but with limited distance ability due to smaller coal space, useless for long RPSI journeys, unfortunately. 1 Quote

GSWR 90 Posted November 18, 2023 Author Posted November 18, 2023 (edited) It’s worth mentioning that the storm that caused the flood did quite a lot of damage to the loco shed’s roof. So there won’t be any work on No 90 or any of the other steam locos until the roof is repaired. You can donate to the flood recovery fund here. On a slightly less depressing note, I am working on a few projects to raise money for 90’s overhaul, but given how preoccupied everyone at DCDR is with the flood recovery it’ll be a good few months before it’s all ready. GSWR 90 Posted January 2 Author Posted January 2 (edited) It is with great pleasure that I inform you all that No 90 was not swept away from the floods. Her boiler cladding came in handy for insulating the diesel locos’ traction motors when they were being dried out. It will be a while before we start working on her again but at least she’s safe. Most of the parts taken off her so far were stored in/on G613 so they are safe as well. Edited January 2 by GSWR 90 7 Quote
jhb171achill Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Will be fantastic to see her back in traffic again! Quote
