That's a great shame, as the engine would otherwise be a decent fit for the Downpatrick line. She hasn't worked for over 50 years.

She’s probably be too heavy on coal to make her economic to run there. It’s just 2 miles or so to Inch Abbey but to just light up a loco like that is £100+ of coal.

If a typical loading was five packed bogies you’d recoup that but not with normal passenger numbers.

But how economical would a locomotive like that run on say runs to maynooth and back or short runs ect.

The Sligo tanks had a reputation for being heavy on coal. They are not passenger locos (90% of SLNC passenger traffic was diesel by time of their arrival in 51) but designed for the hard slog of hauling 25 wagons of cattle over a badly laid 45 mile long rollercoaster. The UTA never used them, even when less than a decade old, for anything other than freight in regular service. 131 is ideal for the RPSI’s Dublin runs with the necessary grunt and acceleration- arguably a U would be even better ….if only we had one!

It’s worth mentioning that the storm that caused the flood did quite a lot of damage to the loco shed’s roof. So there won’t be any work on No 90 or any of the other steam locos until the roof is repaired.

You can donate to the flood recovery fund here.

On a slightly less depressing note, I am working on a few projects to raise money for 90’s overhaul, but given how preoccupied everyone at DCDR is with the flood recovery it’ll be a good few months before it’s all ready.

It is with great pleasure that I inform you all that No 90 was not swept away from the floods. Her boiler cladding came in handy for insulating the diesel locos’ traction motors when they were being dried out. It will be a while before we start working on her again but at least she’s safe. Most of the parts taken off her so far were stored in/on G613 so they are safe as well.

MINOR ANNOUNCMENT:

Thanks to Kevin Meany we have decided to mark an event that looks like it went overlooked on some peoples radar. 1984 marks 40 years Since a Landmark event in the History of the GSRPS. the arival of 131 To Mallow. As a small way to comemorate this event, We have replacated the key rings produced by the GSRPS in the 1980s and remade them in 2024.

Anyone who worked on 131 thoughout the years it was in Mallow is entitled to a Free Keyring along with a Certificate of aperication. in order to claim this. just contact Kevin or myself with a PM or to the email adress below.

The price for these will be 5 euros per Key ring plus postage. the money raised from this will be put towards GSWR No.90, A former GSRPS engine. In Light of the recent horiffic flooding event, we felt it was to help another Legacy of GSRPS live on in any small way.

These will be availible on the 12th of March. at that point we will start accepting orders for these. however if you are attending any Cork based Railway events such As the upoming IRRS Presentations in Wilton or the "times arrow" Railtour. at least one of us will be there. it might save you on postage!

in the meantime if you have any questions at all regarding this project i would strongly advise you email:

gswr90fundraiser@gmail.com

Or give myself a PM.
