It's looking sweet Stephen. I like the Bell container in one of the pics and the calender looks lovely on the wall. Revell SM 332 is a nice Day Glow color. Try the various brands that have been mentioned and see what you like best. I'm enjoying this thread immensely.

The station is a Hornby item, iirc, its a thomas the tank engine station :) Will have a check :)

 

The next phase (arriving thursday) will cut through the wall to the right behind the signal box, and cross the stairwell with a giant suspension bridge :) (and yes, I'm rather looking forward to that!!! )

Ok, first up here are some photos of the magnets in situ

Magnets arrived this morning Stephen and I just wanted to know a couple of things. When you installed them are all the poles facing the same way. Also is that code 75 track you are using if so will I need to raise the magnets up with code 100 and finally how close do you need the magnets to the Kadee swing arm on the coupler.

I found that the magnets, once stuck in a row, don't matter which way is north or south, they will work.

 

I set them to be roughly level with the track top - with code 75, they glue to the foam underlay and are pretty much at railheight.

That could well work with code100, otherwise a little .25 shim might be needed.

 

Once at track level, they work perfectly will with kadees once they are set correctly, I had a few mounted in the craven NEM socket, which is too high anyway, once I glued the kadee underneath, it worked perfectly.

 

I've since painted them muddy track colour and they are basically invisible! Will give them a lick of yellow so I can remember where to stop trains!

 

Just ordered another big batch myself - considering they work out a few pence each, and a kadee uncoupler is 5-6 pounds, plus is mahooosive!

Your layout is really coming on a pace. It would be nice if you had the time to do a resume of where the whole layout is now, it’s so extensive and spread over so many pages and it’s hard to get an overall impression on the extent of progress....only if you have the time and inclination.

Just a few thoughts on the neodynium magnets for uncoupling...

 

I tried this myself when I started using the Kadees with magnets of various shapes sizes. The main problem I found

was that they were a bit too powerful, the problems arose when using the draft coupler box Kadees. The magnets

uncoupled fine but they pushed the couplers so far to the side that when you tried to push the wagon/coach you had

just uncoupled the Kadees missed each other and you ended up contacting buffer-to-buffer. This might be ok on straight lengths

of track but even slight curves caused buffer lock. It does'nt really happen with the NEM Kadees as the side to side

movement of the coupler head is far more restricted.

 

Another thing was that the effective uncoupling area was tiny and you had to position the couplers very precisely

over the magnets to get them to work. You have much more room for error with the Kadee magnets. Although I

agree that the over-track magnet looks a little odd!

In short - yes.

 

I experimented with neo magnets under kato HO track, and found very similar issues, the magnets where so strong that you couldn't push the 'just uncoupled' wagon with the coupler because the magnet had thrown the coupler heads too far apart.

 

At which point kadees seemed to be in restricted supply, my grasshopper mind wandered, and the experiment was never completed.

 

In my case I've pretty much standardised on the Bachmann small coupling, it's 'wrong' but I think a kadee is just as 'wrong' - Just my opinion, and I completely respect and admire those that use and persevere with kadees.

Well my use of Kadees is purely for the convenience of uncoupling and the ability to shunt stock to anywhere on the layout and just leave it there! The prototypical arguement does'nt even come into it... And you're right, the Kadees take a bit of perseverance to get them working consistantly.

 

Have you tried the Brian Kirby modification to the Bachy couplers? Before switching to Kadees I was experimenting with that method, and it works very well. Although you can't

shunt after uncoupling, it works beautifully.

Not yet but the system is cheap, simple and elegant - much like myself in fact =))

 

Magnets, staples and glue is all the Kirby system needs - tho' I do suspect again that a too powerful magnet may cause involuntary uncoupling at unfortunate instances(!)

Same here I had a we play about today with them and had no issues. Your coupling space is a little shorter than the Kadee magnet but that just adds to the fun of accurate uncoupling and controlling the loco. The mistake I made before was to use bigger Neo Magnets but the ones Stephen suggests work fine =D
