Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Try the hornby fencing Stephen it's quite a close match and a lot easier to install Quote
BosKonay Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Hmm, actually I do have a few lengths in a box somewhere from the old layout.... Might work with a lick of black paint.... will try that out! Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Might work with a lick of black paint.... will try that out! Spray them with Halfords grey plastic primer they will look better grey on top of the bridge Quote
BosKonay Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Cheers lads , will experiment a bit and hopefully post up some photos Now back to soldering go I Quote
Sentinel281 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 As I've seen the prototype now, I got another idea: look for ships modellers. Perhaps you cand find railings with four rails there, I know that exists in many varations from RTS (ready to swim) or as etched kits. Quote
BosKonay Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Great idea sentinel I need just over 2 metres worth ! Quote
BosKonay Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Very rough mockup of hornby fences on the viaduct Quote
Dave Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 That's going to look great! Have you decided to paint or wrap the viaduct? Quote
BosKonay Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Ideally wrap (though it's a monster project in it's own right ) In the short term, I was planning a coat of grey primer to 'concretify' it and to finish the deck ballast and handrails Quote
BosKonay Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Small updates today. Here are some shots of the headshunt for Blackroad Road branch / depot, and the associated junction. Any thoughts / opinions on the backdrop here - the retaining wall could work... Quote
irishthump Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 I like the retaining wall. It will look fantastic painted and weathered. Quote
BosKonay Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Thanks - as you can see from the pics, the headroom at this end is nothing - but I was thinking of putting a small batten behind the retaining wall and 'planting a bit of hedgrow on top / behind to blend into the angle where the wall meets the roof... Quote
irishthump Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 I agree, even the smallest of gaps will give it a sense of space. Where did you get the wall sections? Are they plaster casts? Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Stephen put the retaining wall in with loads of trees and shrubs above it and drooping over the top and down the front of it, should look great and maybe even a wall mounted signal Quote
Dave Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Looks great! Definitely a bit of space will make all the difference. Quote
BosKonay Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Sounds like a plan - cheers lads! The wall is the same as Anthony is using - drop him a PM am sure he can arrange some for you I reckon a 1" little batten behind the retaining wall, then plant it up as a nice overgrown embankment, and the wall a lovely dark grey shade of mucky, unloved concrete Maybe some trunking / cables along it too.... Quote
BosKonay Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 In the corner (top right of first photo) I'm planning a small town / something scene, with a level crossing over the mainline .... Quote
RedRich Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Have a good look at some real retaining walls Stephen. The retaining wall on the approach to Heuston is a good example. Nothing like the real thing to inspire. Rich, Quote
BosKonay Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 hehe, do you have a camera in my office Rich Quote
BosKonay Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Well, bit of a milestone today The entire double mainline and all mainline junctions are now down, glued down (and partially ballasted) Clearance tests are all done (using mkII, mk4, craven, pocket wagon, cement bubble and DD coaches!) I even managed to hoover the entire attic (which hadn't been done for about three months! eek!). Result is a nice, clean environment, for tomorrows big push to get the two mainline buses in so I'll have a double powered loop by this time tomorrow! Tomorrow I'll try take a full circuit of photos and maybe a video if I can manage getting power fully down! Quote
Dave Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Looking forward to the video, no pressure Stephen:tumbsup: Quote
Kirley Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Well, bit of a milestone today I can feel the excitement building from here - good luck for tomorrow. Quote
BosKonay Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Maybe not Leo no, might open a beer tho Quote
Barl Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 The layout is coming along nicely and those DD's are stunning! Good luck with the opening trials Quote
BosKonay Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 I'm afraid the OCD kicked in 6 metres of Bus, 5 solder tags, 34 cable tie bases and 34 cables ties later, I'm a quarter of the way around the mainline But damn it looks pretty under the boards.... where no one will ever see them..... ah well Quote
Sulzer201 Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 It must be a complicated system of sparks under there Stephen, fair play to you and good luck. Quote
BosKonay Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Cheers! Not too complicated at the moment but I'm future proofing extensively so block detection and full automation can be added in stages without any rewiring. Quote
Dave Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Way to go, its well worth to put the effort in now. Where's the pics? Quote
BosKonay Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 A bit of fun with some non prototypical MRAs the other day Hopefully tomorrow I'll finish the soldering and be able to roundy roundy [video=youtube;cXHraYJf-HY] Quote
BosKonay Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 (and yes, you can see / hear when 071 hits the unpowered next section at a scale 70mph ) Quote
Railer Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Is that a 59 you have painted up in the IC livery. Quote
BosKonay Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Ah yes, well spotted - an old one if ever there was, i think the repaint is 4-5 years old if not more at this stage Quote
