jhb171achill Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 A microcosm of Senior's travels, back in the says when Jesus was in shorts, Pussy was a kitten, and the Red Cow Roundabout was cobbled in black'n'white.... Quote
DiveController Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 I'm sure these could be sold if you don't want to hang onto them yourself. I love the religious themed punching though Quote
Broithe Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 That bottom ticket is a gem. About fifteen years ago, I had my ticket punched by a girl who looked about fifteen - they had, I presume, let her choose her own punch and she had picked a heart-shaped one - and I had got in the first-class by accident - and she had decided to let me off.... Garfield Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Love how the ticket clerk insisted on issuing a ticket to Valentia and not 'Valencia'. Quote
jhb171achill Posted February 1, 2015 Author Posted February 1, 2015 Yes, Garfield, Valentia was, like Drumshanbo, one of a number of places persistently misspelt by not just CIE, but the GSR and its predecessors too. Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 First class all the way to Dingle, no slumming it with the great unwashed! Quote

jhb171achill Posted February 2, 2015 Author Posted February 2, 2015 I've a box of these free passes.... first class to Tullow, Larne Harbour to Strabane via Waterside and Victoria Road, Kingsbridge to Banagher, Amiens Street to Oldcastle, Enniskillen to Bundoran, Enniskillen to Westland Row, Kingsbridge to Kilrush for himself plus bicycle, first class free pass for unlimited travel between Aughnacloy and Maguiresbridge, etc etc.... plus numerous Dublin to Cork etc.... Weshty Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Dublin to Valentia. What would you give to travel those last 40 miles eh? Quote
jhb171achill Posted February 2, 2015 Author Posted February 2, 2015 Indeed! But it may soon be possible, by cycle. Kerry CoCo has been given €3m to develop Killorglin to Cahirciveen as a cycleway, a la Achill branch or Newcastle West.... Quote

minister_for_hardship Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 (edited) Love GSWR pass with the W crossed out the General Manager W H Morton was former MGWR CME responsible for the introduction of the Woolwich, Midland Cattle engines (GSR J5), promoted to GM after a stint as CME at Inchacore. I have seen quite a number of pre-GSR tickets used and dated well into the 1950's, usually issued from fairly rural locations to use up old ticket stocks, didn't think a personage such as WHM was into 'recycling' as well. (though presumeably it was his office secretary that wrote it out, judging by the ink stamp) Edited February 4, 2015 by minister_for_hardship Quote
Weshty Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 This is a lovely thread. These little stubs have so much history in them. And representTive of a very analog age, signatures, handwriting and physical date stamps. Class. Quote
josefstadt Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 As you can see, he sometimes travelled third class, just to be able to say he did..... :-) And he even had to buy a ticket on one occasion (Belfast-Finaghy above)! Why were the corners cut off a couple of the tickets in the third photo? Quote
jhb171achill Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 They were a little perforated tab they tore off to show it was used, a bit similar to punching tickets. jhb171achill Posted February 6, 2015 Author Posted February 6, 2015 (edited) True. My father, aunt and grandparents spent many years going back and forth to that area here they had relatives, and spent many summer holidays there. Senior was taken to see the "stolen remains" in the 1920s, at which time much was still visible. Here's more stuff. GSR crest on later (post 1933) GSR maroon paint, and an old railway letter seal of ancient parentage... Edited February 6, 2015 by jhb171achill Quote
