aclass007
Look at this beauty! Shame it's in O gauge. I wonder do Heljan ever produce the same model in both gauges. I wouldn't mind getting a few in OO.... https://railsofsheffield.com/class-b-tank-wagon-esso-black-without-full-branding-1007-heljan-JJJA24925.aspx
Blaine
The Dapol Esso tank wagons are not a million miles off
Weshty
Must say, O gauge is appealing to me more and more.....
David Holman
Check out the Dapol Terrier W, 'tis a little gem!
aclass007
The Dapol Esso tank wagons are not a million miles off I totally agree. Indeed, I have a rake. They even have the advantage of the modeller being able to shorten the chassis and add the SSM detailing during the build to make them very prototypical... But saying all that, if Heljan produced these in OO, I wouldn't hesitate to buy them....
Mayner
The main drawback with both the Dapol and Heljan models is that the majority of the ESSO Teo. tank wagons had the noticeably longer Class A Tank barrel. Its easy enough to extend the barrel of the Dapol tank with parts cut from another kit, but expensive to chop up a rtr model. http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/essoatankwagonvb/h32cd852b#h32cd852b http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/db999xxxtank/hb25d798#hb25d798

I'm very tempted to get a rake of them. However, I'd hold off if I thought another manufacturer was planning on doing the Irish version sometime in the future.......

(i.e. €405 for a rake of 15 compared to €225 for 15 similar bachmann wagons).
hurricanemk1c
It seems to be the way things are going these days Noel.

Re the price - it's highly competitive really. Having seen first hand the true 'cost' of quality factory run models, these are well priced - factoring the much larger UK market runs... DiveController
Still cheaper than 3 IRM ballast wagons......... Economies of scale and all that. True, but hopefully common tooling will allow these to be reasonably priced going forward, or at least that's how I understood it. Have to agree with Noel that the Heljans are not that cheap considered the projected market. The relative strength of the dollar may be a factor as I understand the USD is the trade currency with the Chinese (assuming that's where production occurs)

We've also addressed this odd rumour that prices will go down with future runs previously. It's not true.
flange lubricator
I see oxford rail is also doing a B class tank wagon with a revised suspension I think this means the addition of J hangers which would make them the nearest yet to the Irish /CIE ESSO wagons and best of all Hattons are advertising them on pre order for £16.50 that makes them about €19.00!! https://www.oxforddiecast.co.uk/products/class-b-tank-esso-unbranded-black-revised-suspension-47792-or76tkb002
