Ready for painting. As first attempts I’m happy enough, though many details don’t bear close inspection by any means. 

The small van is a Roxey LSWR model, but similar to vans the GSWR had many moons ago. The bogie is GSR van 2548. Glazing to go in once it’s painted.

Right now the roofs and chassis aren’t attached to the bodies, pending painting, which is why the bodies look high.

I was persuaded to give it a go by a friend who had been making “O” gauge brass kits for years. Likewise, I had filed brass and soldering under “ABSOLUTELY never”!

My biggest regret now is that I didn’t start years ago. Some of the SSM Bredin kits aren’t available any more.

The goods one day in 1963 had a strange cargo, loaded by the most junior member of my family, as well as a number of grain vans for the mill…. Seen here crossing Carrowmore Bog…

A winter day in 1973 sees the up goods from Dugort Harbour scurry across Carrowmore Bog….

Summer 1961; the afternoon local arrives and departs back to Castletown. An “A” off the down goods deputises for C221, which as often had failed that morning…..

And yes, I need to get a thin pale green waistline on that old GSWR-esque bogie…..!

In a field adjacent to Dugort Harbour station, there’s an old cattle truck body….. all that’s inside it are some empty oil barrels, a broken wheelbarrow, and a pile of sodden turf in the corner. If the farmer wants to use it as a shed, he’d need to sheet over the gaps….

Reminds me of the skit of the two cavan men claiming they walked to the moon, describing the surface as rocky, barren, cold, devoid of any atmosphere whatsoever, only for it to turn out they'd gone to Belturbet..

Fair Day beckons again, as empty cattle trucks are moved up to Castletown cattle sidings. 

Empty grain vans for West Kerry Mills have been added onto this empty wagon working in 1971….

Came across the remains of an ex- GSWR Cattle Wagon on a farm near Rathowen about 30 years ago.  Ends and one side relatively intact sheltered by roadside hedge/trees, the other (field) side almost completly open, little remaining of the framing, though iron roof still in good condition. Came across an ex-GSWR 14' covered possibly a convertible body in the area around the same time.

Not so many still survive, but at that time you’d never know what you’d find in rural settings like you mention….

A VERY rare animal these days. 

I saw two Schull & Skib vans which were in that condition, or worse - and that was over thirty years ago. I doubt there’s much left now - they were in a field near Schull.

Summer 1957, and the 12:30 mixed connection from Castletown West arrives at Dugort Harbour. Jhb171 is a very small person.

B121s were very rare in Dugort Harbour, as the turntable had been out of use since 1951. 

However, an almost brand new one appeared on the midday mixed up working one summer day in 1961, when branch engine C210 threw its toys out of the pram at Castletown Junction. 

It was unusual at that time, also, to see a brand-newly repainted GSWR brake van, as Inchicore was churning out many new ones.
