Came across this article, looking for the station to be reopened: https://www.meathchronicle.ie/2021/10/27/calls-to-reopen-the-hill-of-down-train-station/

I wonder how long it took for a barge to go from Dublin to Limerick - a lot longer than road or rail I'd be willing to bet!

I read somewhere that, whatever about the Aussie govt not wanting to move to solar, there are 1000 domestic homes a day going solar. Makes sense really - with all the sun they get! Good vid here from lad in NZ, fitting solar & hooking it up to his hot water tank. I love this guy's vids - great for rebuilding/getting stuff going: https://youtu.be/r7g-27AXFEg

I was reading an article on EV in the States. I can't remember which State it was, but the author of the article mentioned in his cost breakdown, that there was a yearly tax on the EV 'for not using petrol/diesel'! The way it brokedown, was that it actually cost more to run the EV than the traditional 'ICE' car. That being said, he gave the cost of fuel as $2.80/gal - now, if you convert what we/most of Europe pay for fuel, it'd be around $7.50/gal - that would change the balance to the EVs favour!!

USA is the #1 polluter, with Australia being the #1 if you take per capita into account. Yet it is always "oh, look at India & China polluting". The West polluted like a good thing during the Industrial Revolution, to get where they are today. Now, the likes of Africa aren't 'allowed' to... Also, the whole crypto-currency generation, and the power it draws, is total bullshit which should be shutdown/banned/criminalised.

I'd be interested in days/times they pass through Athlone
-
Any update on these - have they arrived, or are they still in production? I'm guessing not arrived, as there'd be pics posted of them

Totally not my era, but I went ahead recently and ordered one, as the presentation box and all the extra bits make it that bit extra special!

Going back to using ponies for delivery are they?

Former MGWR/CIE Mullingar-Athlone rail line greenway
skinner75 replied to Noel's topic in Letting off Steam
The car park of Dunnes Stores in Montree is just to the right of the underpass in the pic above, so handy parking when getting pics. The pics of the track curving towards the White Bridge were taken from the top of the ramp, about 100ft from the underpass, so not much of a walk from the car park -

I thought the new stretch from the White Gates down to the hospital was opened yesterday, so I cycled down to the hospital to check out the new stretch. No barriers, so on I went. Turned the corner, and found an ESB van and crew on the path. Passing them, one said that I must be the first on it. Strange I thought, but carried on. Fences blocking access to the trail at the side of Dunne's, but I carried on. Got to the White Gates, only to find barriers across the way! I turned back, and when I got back to the hospital, the ESB crew were gone, and there was a plastic barrier blocking the exit. I moved it so I could get the bike through, then moved it back. So, turns out I was the first cyclist on that stretch after all!! Here are a few shots I took - looks like it'll be a good spot for photos Few more pics -

A friend of mine got a job in a sorting office a few years back, and only lasted a couple of weeks before he packed it in. He said the carry on was ridiculous - the boss & crew going off for hours long lunch breaks etc He packed it in as his back isn't in great shape & they were expecting him to do all the donkey work being the new guy. Not saying they are all like that, but the 80s mentality you mention was certainly the case in that centre!

I knew there was going to be a bit of a wait till they did another run of them when I placed the order, but yeah!

I paid €29 online this morning for duty on the weed van I ordered from Silver Fox last November. Postie left the customs charge note in this morning

Really nice work! Looks like Slieve Callan to me -
I watch very very little tv these days, but totally agree on most adverts sucking. There are exceptions though, with the John Smiths ads featuring Peter Kay being ones that come to mind - bit of humour goes a long way! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15l3hx6loQc

I'm glad I cancelled all my magazine subs last year so! Brexit - the gift that keeps on giving... They'll be putting sawdust in the bread soon - mark my words

Pretty Intercity - Latest Britbus Commission Advertises Irish Rail

Lovely stuff lads - pair of them ordered up now! 48A route and all - that, the 14A and 16A would be the routes closest to where I grew up -
On a slight tangent, but still regarding delivery charges, we had an incident with a crucial server and needed parts asap. We were given the option of getting the parts from London, as none were in Ireland. The option was there to have a guy pick up the parts, hop on a plane across, then taxi to site - eliminating any customs delays. The cost? 3 grand!! Turns out the parts weren't that critical in the end There'll be 'model mules' soon! "Did you pack your suitcase yourself sir?"
