I guess it also depends on the size of the runs. We had a pair of NIR blue 071s in 'half runs' of 200 odd units only.

Kadee no.5 with gearbox, yer only man. Get a kadee height guage, and mount the coupler to the underside of the coach itself, cutting off the hornby giant yoke entirely.

The SMD LED strips are very small (some strips are under 1mm thick) and will adhere to the side walls... You can also paint the non LED bits of the strip, to make it look like the inspection pit walls...
