At the risk of mentioning the World Cup, which appears to be going on at the moment, apparently, it seems to me to be fortuitous that Northern Ireland didn't get to the finals in the USA.

It would be very confusing for the viewers and listeners, as Haaland and Wolfe seem to be playing for Norway, for some reason.

I'm starting to get worried England are going to win..... I'm still getting over the Czechia heartache. I don't want to be surrounded by gloating England flag wavers to compound it! 😞

I can't imagine that England will last through the next round - and I hope they don't. I want to be able to enjoy a quiet sport-free night in my local pub!

I wouldn't worry about it! If Mexico don't beat em, they'll go on to meet either Brazil or Norway

I think you might be safe.

Only France and Mexico have won every game so far - and only Mexico have done it without conceding a single goal.

How long will people keep going on about 1966 for?

I can remember when the Boer War was that far in the past.
 

Trivia - eight countries have won the World Cup, but only one of those has not won it on home turf...

I hope you're all right! I don't know whether I can cope with the collective smugness if they do! and I too want to be able to go to the pub without being surrounded by George crosses. It feels like I'm in some kind of convention I don't want t to be in.... 😂

In Rathdowney, there is the Dawn Meats factory, in the old Perry's brewery, and a large proportion of the workforce there are Brazilian - Portuguese would be the second language in the town now.

I spotted a chap with 'that sort of name' and the same 'sort of look', making local videos on YouTube - the videos had information and comments in English and Portuguese - fair enough - but, occasionally there was another language.

Further investigations revealed that he was not Brazilian, as I had assumed, but from East Timor. Of course, that was also a Portuguese colony in the past, so he could travel halfway across the world and still end up working with people in the same language...

It's lovely that people can travel half way across the world and find a little community. This diversity also greatly enhances our own communities and culture 🙂

Hhmmm, I'm not sure if I should admit to this.....

My grandson for some reason couldn't get his infant mouth round Grandpa, so I became known in the family as "Kaka" - DON'T LOOK UP THE MEANING !!!!!!!

So "Kaka" I am and I have a Brazilian football shirt with that gent's name on the back. I wore it one night when Brazil was playing on TV and the silly sod got sent off.

No worries about England getting far, their defence is non-existent.

Of course, they need Northern Ireland's captain to play for them. When Conor Bradley played for Liverpool against Real Madrid, Conor saw Mbappe off the pitch!

They breed real men in Castlederg .....

What did you expect lad. :)

I enjoy Watching England play, probably due to some little familiarity of the players I reckon.  I could not care a jot for any other team really, Perhaps the odd underdog. 

Hope they win it so I can watch the fall out!! LOL! Doubtful it will happen, sadly France I expect.....

I think you're right. France look a level above everyone else. Although, I could easily see Spain, England or Argentina winning it if France implode. 

I do enjoy the tongue in cheek winding up of England fans, although some don't have much of a sense of humour. Being born and brought up in GB, and having a Geordie accent, I often feel a fraud compared to real Irish folks like yourselves. However, I am really really proud of my Irish heritage and love the country. But like generations of people, that interconnection of migration makes for complex relationships!

Speaking of that, there's an interesting podcast kicking around at the moment on the conspiracy that Gordon Banks was poisoned by the CIA in 1970. A contaminated bottle of beer legend has it. I don't know whether there is much truth in it, but it is an entertaining listen.

Something similar happened to the New Zealand rugby team in 1995 just before they were about to play the final against South Africa. There was much said at the time about whether the food poisoning was deliberate.
