Again, any members in or near Laois, the Coolnamona trip is still going ahead of there’s enough people, please do express interest here. Even if you don’t live near Laois, could schedule it for the afternoon to allow people to travel. There’s also a good few motorway hotels only around 1km from the site, so if staying overnight is more convenient for most the trip can happen earlier.

yip i have time this n next week but once harvesting starts, i will have very little time,
count me in, Coolnamona or where ever, as long as the choice of sites makes sense on a few levels.

Westland horticulture also have peatlands, they might have locos, i was suppose to meet them, about other business, but the lead went cold.

I for one, would be very interested in this, We should see if bord na mona are willing to fire up an engine for us. ( I realize that's very unlikely.) Should be a good trip if numbers are high enough.

Having been onsite before, the engines’ batteries have been removed and their coolant, oil, fuel, etc. tanks have been drained, so I doubt BnM would be rushing to play trains for us. I agree, should be great if we can get enough people interested, anyone please rate the thread five stars to try and get it to as many interested people as possible. Thanks!

This is great to hear, the C&L are doing more than anyone to preserve BnM’s railway history. Not only that, they have so many preserved vehicles that they could open an entire transport museum. The top loco appears to be a Wagonmaster, the bottom a rebuilt one. Went to the C&L just a couple of weeks ago.

Ah go on, buy it…

Seriously though, the loco looks to be recently overhauled with modern controls, touchscreens, etc. Hope they find a good home.

Saw that earlier- although BnM actually flat out told me LM335 was going to Stradbally when I inquired months ago. Considering not even all the SWR volunteers knew, I’m not sure they should have said so. Although it’s possible they had to say so due to freedom of information, IIRC it was a volunteer buying LM335, so hopefully anyone involved with Stradbally can clear that up.

Apparently BnM has purchased Velorail vehicles- looks like they're planning something with their lines, so maybe not all hope is lost. (source: IRRS journal Feb. 2024, News section)

Also, I think I saw @jhb171achill mentioned as the author of a text relating to a late stationmaster at Limerick junction in that same journal. Wouldn't surprise me, I think JHB might literally be the IRRS archive personified (in a good way).

I reckon there won't be on-board catering, at least to start with.

"Rail Cruising' operations using self drive "Buggies" have become successful tourist operations on disused railway lines over the past 10-15 years.

The Rotorua operation uses purpose built cars, the "Forgotten World' operation uses converted golf buggies.

Both are commercial operations on 'mothballed' lines without Council or Government funding.

There are a few solutions to ableism point tbh. Example of “buggies” is a nice idea, and circling back to the point on weather, having both electric buggies and pedal-powered vehicles with some “convertible” roof system would be great. Something simple that can easily be slid open, very akin to a convertible car.

Maybe not super relevant but the Cavan and Leitrim have a couple of manually-powered vehicles, ie a handcart and a vehicle basically made up of two bikes. I’ve had the pleasure of riding on both and I have to say they’d be good fun along a BnM line. I still would love for the same thing to happen on Coolnamona though.

It looks like there is a Velorail operation North and South of Kiltimagh on the Burma Road, no mention of the operation on this Newsgroup, worth while checking out?

It has a small number of very positive reviews, looking on Reddit I get the impression from people that while it's well-run and organised, it's a "one and done" kind of experience.

Less positively, one Mayo councillor called it "an hour and a half of boredom" and added “I actually brought my niece with me, she hasn’t talked to me since".

Wow, really? What vehicles have you used, and on what lines?

got a wooden pallet and took some wheels off some skateboards as flanges. then i got some barings and used them as the main wheels. one one of them i had a chain which connected to a line shaft and then another chain to some peddles. i did most of the edenderry system and a large amount of the Shannon bridge system. some of the track was really bad. despite that i had no derailments.

just got word from BNM that some of the locomotives currently displayed at boora are to become part of a new display. also it seems that all track lifting has stopped. there was a crew working on it a month ago however they have stopped.

If they were to try to develop any of it as track for trains to run on, to give short journeys to people, the existing track would not be in any way satisfactory. The type of track the C & L have would be what would be required, proper ballasted bed and all.

Not sure if anyone is proposing this anyway, but if they were the existing track would have to lifted in its entirety and binned to start with.
