enniscorthyman Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 As I have a few days off this week I thought it would be nice to visit my favourite railway Waterford-Ballinacourty.I am including a collection of Weed killer train photos taken by David Parks during 1985 and 86,along with some of my own photos taken yesterday and back in 1993-96.The line was lifted from mid 90s till late 90s and I found a lot a places impossible to photograph now due to the overgrown conditions.The line once formed the former Mallow-Waterford which closed in 1967,however the line reopened for the Quigley Magnesite works near Dungarvan in 1970 untill it closed in July 1982.The only workings over the line were weed killer trains ( the last ran in 1988) and rail recovery trains. The last movement was in May 1990 with 146 and EM50 ran to Ballinacourty on 6th and the 9th of May. Kilmeaden station. Approach to Kildermody LC Unknown locations-possibly near Carrolls Cross. Carrolls cross Station. Kilmacthomas Station. Currabaha LC west of Kilmacthomas. Durrow Viaduct. Ballyvoyle Tunnell. Ballyvoyle Viaduct. Ballinacourty Loop. Quote
Mayner Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Brilliant Photos:tumbsup: One of my favourite lines one of Irelnds most scenic lines. I have vague memories of the line around the headland at Ballyvoyle? and of the distinctive level crossings in Dungarvan during a childhood journey to from Dublin to Cork via Waterford. Later I was lucky enough to travel over the line before closure and more recently walked through the tunnel and over the viaduct. The section west of Dungarvan had a totally different character through fertile river valleys with several impressive viaducts and interesting stations. John Quote

enniscorthyman Posted May 31, 2012 Author Posted May 31, 2012 John,This line inspired me to really get into Irish railways back in 1992 as its Level crossings,Tunnells,Viaducts and along with the scenery got me hooked,and the modeling side got me thinking. I took a photo yesterday near ballyvoyle viaduct and just as the line turns to show the coast line and a level crossing and keepers house. Stunning views from here,and if I get a chance I will post photo later. Seamus,one should always have a Baby GM in ones pocket as you never know when you need it. Quote

Who knows one day all of us on this site might one day get together and restore a few miles of one of these lost lines. Where there is a will there is a way and the people on this site have the will, knowledge and expertise to tackle such a project. Well done great pics. Quote

A section of it is already 'restored' albeit in 3ft gauge as the Waterford & Suir Valley Railway, while at the other end of the line at Ballinacourty, a section is now an attractive walkway. Btw, I believe the 'man in the brown coat' captured as the train arrives into the loop at Ballinacourty is none other than the photographer Joe St Leger. Quote
Riversuir226 Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Excellent, really like that line how they ever found a route is beyond me. The line to the suir viaduct was only dismantled recently, the bridge still has track in it but is detiorating really quickly, from the bridge to the old junction the formation is in really good Nick, the narrow guage section comes from the old waterford west station there seems to be the remains of a signal cabin on the right hand side of the junction, from Kilmeadan to kildermody there is s few placed were the. Line is accessible but only for a few metres each time.From Carroll cross to kilmac the line is very accessible the only major breach is next to the old sprinkled were the n25 cuts through the formation, kilmac station and fir a few miles through to mg grath crossroads, from here the line us hit and miss whether or which. you can access the formation. There is plans by Waterford county council to make most of the route into a walk way. Quote

Lough Erne Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 If you can track it down there was an "off the beaten track" episode with James Galway? which covered the line prior to the track being lifted. There was good footage of the magnesite trains if I remember correctly. The footage I believe came from the IRRS as there was a RPSI winter meeting about 2-3 years ago which had cine footage of the line in action as well as footage beyond Dungarvan to Mallow. Quote
