. . . and this materials train. . . .

24689875160_0d079c6a07_b.jpg

A question about the materials train above. Is track laid in short sections like the loads above on main running lines, or just in sidings and yards, etc? I thought main line rail was predominantly continuous welded rail laid in long sections, or are short sections like the above welded together?

PS: Nice photo btw.

Noel - I believe the track is made in sections, laid and then welded on sight. this is due to space constraints at the factory and going around curves.

Re grey 071s - 071, 076, 077, 078, 080 (in works I believe), 084, 085, 087, 088. Just over half the fleet now

Orange door! The black'n'tan era isn't over yet.....

I wonder how many 071s there are with orange window frames, wipers or cab doors?

072 has at least one orange door. 071 has that single orange wiper, 083 has orange roof fan covers. That's about all the orange left.

Good evening all,

In a very promising sign, the RPSI's 141 Class loco 175 has been moved from being sandwiched by 162 and a 201 at the other end of the works to being next to the Cravens. I saw this on the 1300 Heuston - Cork but wasn't able to get a shot - so I went back up! Shots from Friday including a misty Portlaoise, a couple at Heuston and a few from Inchicore. Click on any of the shots below or the link to see them all full size

Evening folks,

The main event today was a 1296 tonnes trial train from Heuston to Sallins and back again, utilising 16 Autoballaster Wagons + a dead 201 Class on the rear. The test is part of a study into increasing the maximum length and weight of freight trains from 18 bogies (36 TEU's) to 27 bogies (54 TEU's). Due to very late running of the trial (2 hours late) I only managed to photograph the outward working as I had other commitments for the afternoon.

Other bits and bobs from this morning include:

- 078 running L.E. from Heuston to Portarlington.

- Tamper 744 1050 Kildare - Wexford.

- Usual diet of 22000's and 201 + MKIV sets.

Evening all,

After yesterday's fun and games (plus the bonus of sunshine!) it was back to the more mundane stuff today (with lots of heavy rain) with a visit to Portarlington station to see the recently completed track alterations to the yard on the Down side. The existing down siding was slewed closer to the station and extended. A new siding and locomotive release road was also created. This will allow PWD train locos to run around without going to the Down Main and Down Loop and blocking the mainline.

To see the alterations click http://smu.gs/20BYLn0

As ever great photos Kieran.

Do you know why 226 was pulling and 8209 pushing the 16 auto balusters? Are the two locos electrically connected for driving from one cab, or do they have some form of comms between two drivers?

From the Wanderer's earlier comments, it looks like 8209 was a passive 'passenger'.

Thanks Noel!

The rear loco in the formation was not providing traction power - it was there to eliminate a run around at Sallins, as well as to add additional weight. 8209 went down shut down, whilst 226 went up idling

Good evening all,

A few photos from Heuston, Portarlington and Kildare from Monday 29th February. Although it was wet some interesting running was around, and as a result I unusually took two videos. One is of 075 on the DFDS liner passing through Portarlington and the other is 078 slipping and screaming out of Kildare with the laden timber. Both are in the album at the end of this post. As usual, click on any of the photos for the full size and description

Thanks Kieran. The grey 071 pulling the timber train in the 2nd video sounded bizarre. Has it been re-engined with some more modern power plant? It sounded more like a hair dryer than the familiar GM.

Evening all,

March 2016 starts off quite dramatically here in Ireland. Two updates from me

First, shots from Thursday, mainly of Inchicore and getting a shot of the Belmond designated loco 216. The loco is currently in an anti-corrosive primer, whilst we all wait for it to be released!

Secondly, this morning (Friday 4th March) brought snow to the country, with over an inch in Kildare. A little diversion during my morning commute to college was called for to get a few shots of trains in the snow

The February gallery comes to a close with some pictures from Killarney and Killeen Cutting in the Killarney - Farranfore section, where recent engineering works have taken place to regrade the cutting.

Nice shot Neil! Is it possible to get access at all to the weedspray crew van/ex-TPO and Fuel Oil wagons on the siding to the right of your photo, or does that require a Ministerial Order? Brake gear in particular? *hint*
