A very nice Irish Freight models P&T van arrived yesterday and was coupled up to a B&T 141 rake of cravens and gsv. Nice crisp paint job too.

Should look at home on a 1960s and early 70s scene

Yes, Jawfin, it is. Unfortunately, every single example of the "normal" ones - both luggage / genny, 4 & 6 wheeled - are long gone; I know this as I was actively seeking one for Downpatrick some years ago.

One four wheeler survived well into the nineties, derelict in Heuston Station. Scrapped now.

Still there last time I checked, JB... although it's been a while since I was in Heuston.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see Jawfin's post above and thought JB was referring to tin vans in general...

Looks great, Noel! Hmmm, ….. may need to get me one of those:trains:

Is the GSV from IFM also?

Hi Kevin. No the GSV was a Silverfox and the P&T TPO is Irish Freight Models. These two mixed with one or two MM Cravens and an IFM Park Royal make up an interesting rake behind a black and tan 141 possibly running on the old Galway route. I'm very happy both of these specialist RTR coaches and impressed with the job Tom has done on the TPO. Both run well.

Wouldn't mind collecting one of IFM's Bulleid heating vans in the future:

IFM P&T TPO + SF GSV + IFM Park Royal. MM Craven in foreground

It was not inexpensive, but worth it IMHO to have an RTR one finished so well on the layout. I have fond memories of travelling on trains with one of these distinctive vans in the 1960s.

I remember it being mentioned to me that one of the uses of the southern track connection between platform 4 ( water ford ) and platform 3 ( cork ) at limerick junction , was to connect up a P&T/mail wagon from the limerick waterford train to the cork one. That would mean it was after the heating /guards. any comments ?

I started work for an post in 1992 and for

a while got to bring the Mail from New Ross

and Enniscorthy Post Offices over to the Station

for the 6.45 train to Dublin. It was mostly a single 141

or even a single 121 with a odd 001 in charge.I had to

throw the mail bags into the EGV, and collect one bag

from Wexford.I remember always trying to get up to the

loco for a look before she got underway. The mails ceased to be carried by rail in January 1994.

Enniscorthyman

Was the mails carried on one of the scheduled Connolly-Rosslare passenger trains or a separate mail train?

Wexford had a scheduled Newspaper train for a time in 70s basically a loco and bogie parcel train. The empty working morphed into a late evening Wexford-Connolly passenger train using the stock from the Wexford-Rosslare local passenger train. The set worked back in the early hours of the morning with the Dublin morning newspapers.

The Newspaper trains and the Rosslare local were taken off in the late 70s.

John, the mails were carried in the normal

scheduled trains. The mk2d EGV were the normal

from about 1988 to 2004.I remember the newspaper

trains in the 70s, which normally arrived into

Enniscorthy Station at about 4.45 and as you

said a single bogie van.I got my first spin in a 141

on one of these trains if only through the now long

disused goods Shed. The Late Rory Doyle from

Enniscorthy was always delight to bring chaps

like myself on cab rides. That was a different time

when a cab ride was no bother.I think it must have

been around 76-77 as the 141 was in black and tan

livery.
