Funnily enough reliable operation during leaf fall was supposed to be one of the major advantages of the 121 hauled MK3 push-pull stock over railcars on the Drogheda suburban trains.

Oliver Doyle wrote about placing the loco at the North end of the train and propelling towards Dublin was to reduce wheel slip on up morning suburban trains.

The coaches of a 5 or 6 coach set was supposed to crush and fragment the leaves/ice, and the loco theoretically running in idea rail conditions.

The same reasoning was applied to the design of the Japanese DARTs, hence the positioning of the power cars in the centre of the units.

Very interesting John & josef. Would never have believed that this much wheel damage could occur. It is surprising that he operator has not passed on the repair and loss of business costs to Railtrack. Would have thought that would be sufficient motivation to just clear the track mor frequently.

It never bothered steam engines, says jhb171 the dinosaur.

Leaf fall was not such a problem in steam days, as more control of lineside vegetation growth was done to reduce the risk of fire caused by steam locos, and hence, less leaves on the line. Halcyon days.

And the steam engines were heavier too.

Good times!

Heavier then DMUs yes, heavier then diesel locomotives , no not in general ( if you exclude tenders )

Anyway steam just had a host of other issues.

Horrific incident with five dead and several injured. The tram driver has been arrested.

It was a very early tram, and it has rained here all night - adhesion has the potential to be a problem there - we'll see.
