Just found this old photo of Gort being dry prototyped 3 years ago using elements to check sizing and wagon capacity in loops, etc. and check general arrangement worked. Hard to believe how it started. Thanks to WMRC colleagues for the encouragement and Jonathan and Barry for the photo in their book 'Rails through the West' for the inspiration.

Gort ready for the next phase which is electricity poles, lighting, trees, station fencing and road weathering. And then finally servo operated signals. This will take some time.

ToDo

  • Electricity Poles about the station area
  • Lighting - inside the buildings and street lamps
  • Deciduous Trees
  • Station fencing
  • Road weathering
  • Point rodding along the loop

Layout and this scene was inspired by a photo in the wonderful book "Rails through the West" by Jonathan Beaumont and Barry Carse.

Gort circa 1970. Buildings scratch built using plastic card and balsa using old photos to work out the building shapes and sizes. Gort had two iconic features, its dominant goods shed and its water tower.

Scene based on photo from Book "Rails Through the West" upon which this layout was built. Alas the HLV in 1970 was not fresh out of the carriage paint shop at inchicore (note to self weather that soon).

Looking forward to the final mile. But the divil is in the detail, not gonna rush the final few furlongs.

Sensational Noel!  Will there be a few As appearing soon....?

Thanks. There may be indeed be As, but baby GMs and steam were the main stay of power on this line which was part of the corridor between Limerick and Sligo/Westport via Claremorris. As were used but I understand were rare visitors, more likely that C class locos were used here.

Superb stuff, Noel.

And you're right - the "A" class did indeed work the line, though not so much in the 1960s - more so later. Also, the 121 class appeared, as well as very occasional visits by both 121s and B101s.

Of course, one must not forget the short-lived forays of Westrail's "E" class haulage as well!

15:25 B188 goods prepares to depart after the 15:10 branch service to Tume departs headed by A23r. As B233 C class waits in the loop for the Tuam train to clear.

A23r departs for Tuam hauling daily branch passenger working from Limerick to Tuam.

She's accelerating now out into the countryside

A23r has my all time favourite CIE livery with the stepped orange band. Got the 6 wheel HLV weathered last night (SF). That day glo orange had to go.

I like the figures, I do not like the bases they are on, I would careful cut them off, then either use tacky wax to pop them on the platform or stick on a flatter clear plastic or similar. This is coming together, everything fitting neatly into place, making best use of space, nice build.

I have some swans and ducks - cast metal - but I'm not sure of the origin.

There are seagulls available, too.

These aren't 'mine', they were unpainted, but they're much the same.

CIE Metrovic 001 A class A1 loco at gort having arrived for the first time (JB forgive the B&T behind yes I know they should be flying snail green :) ) but a few silvers did get to haul B&T laminates in the early sixties before the locos were repainted into black livery like A55/A12. A1 and A30 perfect for my era and major milestones in the development of railways in Ireland in the last century.

IMG_5320.JPG

IRM CIE silver livery Metrovic A class crossly powered about to depart for Tuam via Athenry 1963 (1957 if the other two locos were out of shot).

Nostalgia gold.

Amazing work Noel, just read all 7 pages and caught up to now. Attention to real life detail is class and I’m looking forward to following along with you from here :)

I also love comparing the first few sketches of a layout with the most recent photos - it gives you such a sense of achievement and keeps the motivation high!
