Kirley Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 Ok, I can see them now. Flux capacitor wasn't plugged in. Very tidy work K. What's the plan with the windows? Brass overlays or leave them as is? R. R, you've put an idea into my head - have you a link to window overlays, I've seen them somewhere but can't remember where?
Glenderg Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 R, you've put an idea into my head - have you a link to window overlays, I've seen them somewhere but can't remember where? http://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/no-nonsense-kits/products/etchings.html?limit=all They seem to be out of stock unfortunately on most stuff.
Kirley Posted April 17, 2014 Author Posted April 17, 2014 I seem to be spending all my time filling, sanding, priming and then starting the whole process over again. Anyway here is the results so far. Two Intermediates and a Driving Trailer I eventually had a go at the front Cab knowing this would make or break this build. Hopefully I have captured the look but if you think otherwise please say as things can be modified at this stage.
Dunluce Castle Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Beautiful work, what livery you hoping to put her in?
Kirley Posted April 17, 2014 Author Posted April 17, 2014 what livery you hoping to put her in? I am going to do the 3 Car set in Maroon/Light Grey which gives me of option of NIR or IR logos. The Intermediate Car will be painted Maroon/Blue to join a 2 Car set I have in this livery.
Hunslet 102 Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Great job on the power car Kieran,I think you have captured the look very well.Good job with the intermediate coaches also, they too look the part.Just one point with the driving trailer that you might want to have a look at.The drivers window should be a bit larger. The top of the window should be about level with the side cantrail and a bit higher than the drivers side window.I know you have 35 years of NIR,have a look at the close up shot of the driving trailer on page 80,that will give you a good guide.
UP6936 Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Kirley would it be possible to see the power car side on? To me the cab front looks a little pointy in that photo?
Barl Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Very nice work, it looks like all that filling and sanding was well worth it
Kirley Posted April 18, 2014 Author Posted April 18, 2014 Kirley would it be possible to see the power car side on? To me the cab front looks a little pointy in that photo? I think you might have "a point" UP6963 I find it hard to get the nose angle right. It looks like I may have to re profile it. Thanks Alex for the correction on the Driver's window size. "There's none so blind as those who cannot see"
UP6936 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Yep, for all the time it would take it might be best to redo the nose. May as well get it completely right. Besides that however, the model is looking fantastic!
Kirley Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 Still working away on the Class 80 set, mainly the Power Car. Door hinges, handles, hand rails, lifting hooks, roof grill, it just goes on and on. Need urgently photographs of the roof detail on a Class 80 set.
Dunluce Castle Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 It's coming along very nicely, I've got a video that shows roof detail, will that do?
Kirley Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 I've got a video that shows roof detail, will that do? Thanks Nelson, is it your own or is it commercially available?
Kirley Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 Thanks Guys, that's some help but it does not give me enough detail to model from.
Dunluce Castle Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Glenderg posted my video there, but as you say it's not enough to work from, sorry.
Hunslet 102 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Need urgently photographs of the roof detail on a Class 80 set. Kieran-if you have not already got it,pick up a copy of Rail Runabout by Sam Somerville, there is around 8 photographs showing roof detail on the 80 classes in their various liveries.
Kirley Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 (edited) Brilliant, thanks Andy, sometimes you cannot see the woods for the trees. Edited April 27, 2014 by Kirley
Hunslet 102 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Brilliant, thanks Alex, sometimes you cannot see the woods for the trees. No probs Kieran-Andy:)
murrayec Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Hi Kirley Did an 'NIR 80 classes photos' - Search in google http://eiretrains.com/Photo_Gallery/Railway%20Stations%20L/Lisburn/IrishRailwayStations.html#Lisburn_20110514_002_CC_JA.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/87372073@N06/favorites/with/11581489234/lightbox/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/87372073@N06/favorites/with/11581525884/lightbox/ http://www.geograph.ie/photo/2781126 murrayec
Kirley Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 Thanks Murrayec, and with all help tonight I'm getting there.
Kirley Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 Finally ready for priming after completing the roof detail. On inspection after the primer had dried some flaws were found, so it's back to filling, sanding, filling and sanding.
Hunslet 102 Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Top job Kieran, the hard work has paid off, look forward to seeing her finished
kevrail Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Another masterpiece in the making. Great work Kieran
Kirley Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 I finally tracked down the builder of the Maroon/blue Class 80 and he was able to give me some good advice on the front profile of the Power Car, i.e. the top has a 10% tilt and the bottom is perpendicular. So it was out with the saw again. While it was hard to saw into an almost completed model I must admit it was the right decision and I am more content with the profile now.
murrayec Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Hi Kiley No stone unturned, excellent modelling murrayec
jhb171achill Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 As I've often said before, as have others, it's attention to detail like this which makes an already good model absolutely top notch. For some reason, most models I've ever seen of 80s tend not to be the most convincing. But this is (as is the other painted one you showed) and it's especially good to see how it evolved out of ruthless chopping and butchery of old Mk 2's. Now all you need is a crowd of cider-fuelled yahoos sitting inside on their way back from a Saturday festival in Portrush, or a football match in Portadown!
