Hi all, I suppose it's about time to open up a thread here about one of my part-time activities (among many!) regarding railways, so I'll try and keep this thread up to date with the latest news Being an N gauge modeller, Irish N gauge isn't exactly massively well represented. There's a few very nice models that have been bashed together from UK rolling stock or scratchbuilt, but my interest lay in finding various 3D printed products uploaded by people to the likes of Shapeways. The big hole being the most common vehicle class on the Irish network - the Class 22000 ICR fleet. It's a fleet that is reasonably significant to me, commuting on them daily and previously working on them as part of work placements (under supervision) and going to the lengths of doing my college dissertation on the wheels of the fleet. They are a fundamental part of the modern Irish scene, coming in a couple of months after moving to Portlaoise, and instead of complaining I decided to do something practical about it Anyway, enough of that! Stage 1 was to draw the rough vehicle profile (I use SketchUp) and order it to see what it actually looked like. I started off with the "B" car (centre car) Stage 2 onwards was adding detail and see what happened, this included drawing an interior and adding things like gangways and windows The test bogie at this point didn't work out, being too fragile for use. Back to the drawing board for that! I then took a long break and then tackled the cab - four times to try and get the profile right. This time I ordered both an N gauge and OO gauge version just for comparison. This revealed a few engineering issues For those complaining about the resprayed ICR's on the market, it was a distinct possibility as Bombardier did bid for the contract with the Eirestar, but that's another project Current status is nearly complete, just a few minor tweaks to it (such as the bogie attachment point at the cab end needs moving and testing for bogie fitment), then on the next project (of which a test print has been completed......) Regards, Kieran

Whats happening to the spoil wagons?
hurricanemk1c replied to Railer's topic in What's happening on the network?
There was some comments about the capacity of the water tank it carries, but that has been worked around. No issue regarding physical vehicle clearance. Below shot was the first of 2019's tours -

The 2019 spray season was covered by 790 quite successfully. The Sperry is being replaced by the new Track Recording Vehicle coming soon. Get your shota of 700 while you can..... -
Jonathan, can you post a photo of the ESB loco? Suspect it's one of either Allenwood or Portarlington's Number 1, a Ruston 48DL like below. Of course, if it's Allenwood 1 that is preserved in Stradbally, Portarlington 1 was preserved, but not sure on its current status as it was stored at Clonbullogue for the Irish Narrow Gauge Trust

Morning all, Unfortunately real-life got in the way a bit of uploading and captioning photos of late, but trying to catch up before the year end! August was a relatively quiet month, with only two major events, these being the transfer of a De Dietrich set to Inchicore for wheel turning and the naming of Steam Loco LM44 at Stradbally Full month: https://www.flickr.com/photos/hurricanemk1c/albums/72157711321674282 September was a bit busier, with a weekend trip across to London to travel behind the London Transport Museum's 12 "Sarah Siddons", along with a trip to Whitehead and the start of a week-long explore of the network [ Full month: https://www.flickr.com/photos/hurricanemk1c/albums/72157711321674267 October is in progress, but here's a sneak preview of the month, with a visit to the Mountdillon Bórd na Móna system Full album - https://www.flickr.com/photos/hurricanemk1c/albums/72157712120290043egards Regards, Kieran -

Hi all, I've been quite quiet here of late, with other matters taking my spare time once out of work. However, I did complete an all-line rover in the UK during July, matching up with a concert I was at. The overall plan was to try and get as much of the stock that is due for replacement in the next year or two (which is an awful lot!) Day 1 was a simple trip from Nottingham to London, and a quick spin out to Ebbsfleet International for a shot of an unrefurbished Class 373 Eurostar Day 2 started and finished in London, with a trip out to Norwich and the surrounding area before the Stadler units replace things Day 3 saw me hit South Wales, again before a major fleet renewal changes things, ending up in Chester for the night Day 4 was a trip from Chester to Belper via Liverpool and York (with a visit to the National Railway Museum and Betty's Bar) Day 5 saw me head south in the afternoon (having spent the morning around an area I grew up in), and positioning for the Sleeper to Inverness that night....... Day 6 saw me potter around Scotland, starting out from Perth instead of Inverness due to major sleeper delays (being nearly 4 hours late into Perth due to a variety of issues). With the early Hainan flight back to Dublin the following morning, this was the end of the rover Album link - https://www.flickr.com/photos/hurricanemk1c/albums/72157709863437391 Regards, Kieran

Heuston Valeting Plant Refurbishment
hurricanemk1c replied to IÉ TPS's topic in What's happening on the network?
A great transformation from when I was in there to get the RPSI stock out! Saw the Mk4 rake in there one evening heading home Yes, this is the blue shed, and Heuston SER (as the box is known as) is around P10 -
The arrow I think purely states which signal the disc (shunt signal) is associated with, rather than any route setting. In the below, the main signal is HN314, with HN314(S) arrow pointing towards the signal / line (in this case, Platform 4)

hurricanemk1c replied to dave182's topic in What's happening on the network?
Ultimately, you can transport 700-odd tonnes (train can be up to 912 tonnes IIRC, but that includes loco and physical wagon weight) in one go. That's 24 lorries (assuming a payload capability of 30 tonnes). Simple economics -
First 22000 set fully refreshed

It's a nice job (travelled down on the set on the 1805 on Portlaoise). I personally like the contrast, finding the DD interiors very dark -

It would be categorised as a near-miss in any investigation as well. One of the many strange sayings, such as Head over Heels in love

Good evening all, One of the busiest days in recent transport history was Sunday 26 August, with the Papal Visit and final mass in the Phoenix Park. Although the expected 500,000 did not turn up, a respectable figure was still transported by rail-based transport, with several interesting features, including: -8x29000 to M3 Parkway -10 minute DART and Connolly-Clonsilla service (diverging into a 20 minute service to Maynooth and M3 Parkway) -Use of the Luas Racecourse stop for the first time Click on the photo below to view all the photos from the day, and well done to all involved. The few issues that became apparent were well handled. It is estimated that 10,000 passengers passed through Navan Road Parkway with little delay in 90 minutes following the mass Album link - https://www.flickr.com/photos/hurricanemk1c/albums/72157670694689937/with/43630227324/ Regards, Kieran -
