derek Posted September 18, 2024 Author Posted September 18, 2024 The ol crane is pretty c****py now that I see it close up. It was a real rush job, and boy doesn't it look it? I am happy enough with the black parts (arm, cable and grab) but the cab and base are heading for the bin. The design came straight out of my head, so if any of you could provide me with pics of something more true to life, I would be eternally grateful.

derek Posted September 24, 2024 Author Posted September 24, 2024 Jaysus! The King Edward fairly whips it down the incline. Couldn't reach the controller to slow it down and film at the same time Thought it was gonna fly off the layout at one stage 1 1
derek Posted November 16, 2024 Author Posted November 16, 2024 Finally had a go at pouring the water for my river. (did a pond in the town too but that's a story for another day. -No landscaping or anything there yet). Took two boxes of W/S deep pour water- stuff doesn't go far. Made some bullrushes and reeds for along the riverbank. Made the rushes from 0.35mm fishing line, dipped in glue to form a "head", then brown paint. Reeds were just very small rips of green plastic. Stuck them in DAS clay and painted same colour as river bed Then came the moment of truth................ 14 2

Thanks @irishthump. I actually went down that road at the beginning, with bristles. I tried ones from a yard brush and they were way too thick. Probably should have tried some from a paint brush or the like. We live and learn....... 1

Remember you saying that the beads of styrofoam get stuck for ever after using them. derek Posted April 19 Author Posted April 19 No updates on this thread in quite a while. I have been receiving chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma since December. The treatment resulted in quite bad back pain, so I did not really go near the layout. I had a meeting with my consultant during the week and the good news is that my latest scan was all clear. Cancer gone, in other words. Happy days. The trade off with my particular lymphoma is that it is non aggressive and slow growing, but it can never be fully got rid of. This means it will almost certainly return in the future, but hey, I will take the victories where I get them. I had been making some wall sections before Christmas to go around the railway yard, so hopefully I will have some some pics of those soon enough, now that the treatment is finished. Bet ye can't wait 14 1

I’m sure it’s given you a new light on priorities and perspectives, and just posting about it here must have taken some courage, never mind the treatment itself. Hoping you're beginning to feel a bit better now. Very best wishes for the coming months. Cheering for you here. Railway modelling is great therapy. Don't forget to post the pics. Alan 2 2 1

Many thanks for all the words of support, lads. Means a lot. Thankfully the treatment has worked well for me. I have been fighting this thing since 2010 but this is the first time I have needed chemo. Hopefully I will get a break for a few years now. Previous treatments such as anti-body therapy and radiotherapy, while not as severe , are not really long lasting. Onwards and upwards now . Won't let it get me down 7

Bob229 Posted April 26 Posted April 26 Good to hear you are well on the way to good health, look after yourself and enjoy the layout work 1
derek Posted April 26 Author Posted April 26 Again, thanks for the kind words @meathdane and @Bob229. As I mentioned , I have been creating new "stone" walls to replace the brick paper ones previously around the freight yard. this is what was being replaced - I had to make 18 wall sections (100mm each approx) from Das clay and 21 pillars- And this is what I ended up with. I tried a bit of ground cover as well but think I may have overdone the greenery a tad? 7 2
derek Posted April 26 Author Posted April 26 (edited) Next up I think , will be a cattle dock at the church end of the yard ,and then ballast the whole yard. Oh I am really looking forward to all that ballasting- not Edited April 26 by derek 2
