Sulzer201 Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Doing a bit of cleaning in a friend's shed over the weekend and came across this signal indicator. Brings back memories of the clinking and clanking of signal boxes and the smell of paraffin oil on semaphores. Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Very nice, any maker's name on the back? W.R. Sykes and Railway Signal Co would have churned out lots of these. Connect a 6V battery up to the terminals and see if it still works. Quote
Garfield Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Something I picked up a while back... a free travel pass of a different kind! Quote
jhb171achill Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 As a friend of mine from rural Fermanagh would say, Garfield, "that's savage!" Quote

Sulzer201 Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 Apologies for delay minister, this is in a friend's shed so next time I'm down I'll check that out. Quote
Jawfin Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 That reminds me, I found part of a GSWR (if I remember correctly) signal lever the other week... I'll try and find it again soon There's still a few grounded wagons in ever decreasing numbers to be seen. I'm told that there's around 20 grounded coaches and vans in the North alone. By the way, does anyone know of an NCC saloon (or at least half of one) grounded somewhere? Some guy came into Downpatrick last year saying that he knew of one that apparently was a royal saloon. Quote
irishrail201 Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 It would be interesting to know what unknown grounded coaches and vans are out there alright Quote
WRENNEIRE Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Picked this up a couple of years ago with some Mullingar staff's Any idea what it is? Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 It's a track circuit indicator, shows if a section is occupied by a train, or not as the case may be. Quote
Dunluce Castle Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 (edited) Fantastic artefacts everyone. Here's one of mine, It's a cast iron LMS NCC track circuit sign. Edited January 20, 2014 by Dunluce Castle Quote
Dunluce Castle Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Very nice, where did the NCC one come from? Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 (edited) Very nice, where did the NCC one come from? From a guy in England, don't know where he got it from originally. I suppose if any of the NCCs company records of staff survived you could find out who it was issued to, looks like a staff id no. Edited January 20, 2014 by minister_for_hardship Quote

Georgeconna Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 This thread reminded me of these two things I had in the shed, Got them off a chap that I done some work on his layout a year of 2 ago. Does any one know the colour of the Staff rod as I would like to restore them. I imagine it was black and the brass was usually polished? Quote
Garfield Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Valuable little pieces, George... I wouldn't touch them as I believe they'd be worth more as they are now. Quote
Georgeconna Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Thanks GFG, The problem I have or hear really is internal corrosion with bits inside rattling about so eventually these will rust away it seems, Even if the rust was polished off and some laquer put on. I dunno... Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 (edited) They would have been originally painted according to pattern, but the paint would have worn off in service. A was red B was blue C was green http://freespace.virgin.net/david.holden4/index.htm (go to 'token configurations' and scroll down) Better to clean off the steel and laquer it to prevent any further corrosion. Wouldn't worry too much about what rattling inside them, probably loose blobs of solder. Edited February 24, 2014 by minister_for_hardship Quote

An original A or C class one would be very nice, not to mention one for a Sulzer.... (should any of the aforementioned exist, which I'm sure they must do in some form?) Quote
jhb171achill Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 If it's of any interest I used to have a number of GNR ones, all of which were red - but they weren't red the whole way along, just at one end as far as I remember. One is on display along with other staffs in Headhunters Railway Museum in Enniskillen. Quote

(should any of the aforementioned exist, which I'm sure they must do in some form?) Not seen one for either Sulzer. A and C classes had three thick manuals each. Part 2 of each was mostly about the engine, and I've not seen a C class one of those. Part 3 of each also seems relatively less common, not that Part 1's appear to be all that common. Those preserving them tend to need the manuals to use, rather than being collectors' items. Quote
jhb171achill Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 DCDR maintains copies of some, obviously for use on locos preserved there. There isn't one for the "G" class though as far as I know. Not that those driving them need it! Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Have a thin-ish green covered booklet for the A's as originally built, appears to be a booklet for drivers to familiarise themselves. Suppose the heavy manuals are more workshop manuals for the use of lads in Inchicore? Quote
