The first one is from Stradbally, featuring a number of unusual moves for line clearance and vegitation clearance along the line. Plus the chance to get underneath LM44 / Number 2 and getting a few photos Album link - Back in the land of heavy rail, a quick trip to get the Spray Train returning to Portlaoise Album link - And finally for the moment, yesterday's antics waiting for the Spray Train to head out of Portlaoise, which it did 150 minutes late! hurricanemk1c Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Morning all, A few shots from Stradbally on Sunday, where (with the help of the WW2 Re-Enactment Club) we staged a 'War' day with various uniforms and weapons on display. We ran with steam loco LM44 all day and another first was done - the carriages entering the pit road in the shed for an exam. Ablum link - Regards, Kieran Quote
jhb171achill Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 A question regarding the longer coach at Stradbally. Apart from the bogies, is any of it actually ex-CVR? Possibly a much-cut-down chassis? Quote
thewanderer Posted July 13, 2016 Author Posted July 13, 2016 Morning folks, Been a while since the last update due to having a rather busy weekend. All of the July photos can be accessed at http://smu.gs/29FtgbB - The Old Rail Trail Mullingar to Athlone. I cycled the route on Saturday 9th July from Athlone to Mullingar, returning the following day back to Athlone. The entire route is well used by locals and visitors out walking and cycling. For more information on the "Old Rail Trail" as it is now know as, visit the Westmeath County Council website for further information http://www.westmeathcoco.ie/en/ourservices/tourismlibraryartsrecreation/greenway/oldrailtrail-routemap/ All of the photos from the Cycle can be viewed at http://smu.gs/2aaBabg - RPSI Western Gateway. Garfield Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 A question regarding the longer coach at Stradbally. Apart from the bogies, is any of it actually ex-CVR? Possibly a much-cut-down chassis? I think it's ex-C&L rather than CVR, JB... Quote
Mayner Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I think it's ex-C&L rather than CVR, JB... The Stradbally coach was built using the bogies and cut down underframe from 7L the C&L Bus Coach. This coach was re-bodied as a brake 3rd in the 1950s with a bus style body similar to the West Clare railcar trailers The modernised C&L coach 1L went to the West Clare & then BnM, but was destroyed in a fire shortly before the Irish Narrow Gauge Trust started scouring the country in search of narrow gauge coaches. Quote
josefstadt Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 As far as I can remember, some if not all, of the axlebox covers on the coach's bogies are branded CL&RR - Cavan Leitrim & Roscommon Railway. Quote
hurricanemk1c Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Bloody hell - I oiled them and did the pre-service exam on them on Sunday and can't remember what the axleboxes say! Been under it and can say some of the brake hangers are still there As far as I am aware the basic chassis and bogies is from 7L, the Cavan and Leitrim coach. The body is actually a Stradbally production, having been the bus body from 1953-1972 (1959-1972 in Bórd na Móna service) Quote
hurricanemk1c Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Having checked some photos, 7 out of the 8 have "CLRR" on the axleboxes. The other one doesn't have anything on it Quote
Gordon71 Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 The July 2016 Railway Gallery has been updated with photos with the following. 12.7..16. GM 077 with the Irish Rail Weed Sprayer Train visits Newry. Quote
hurricanemk1c Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Evening all, Today the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland transferred their 3 'Baby GM' locos from Inchicore Works (where they have been stored since 2009/2010) to their shed in Connolly station. The day certaintly wasn't straight forward! Originally going to be one transfer, a last minute fault prevented this from happening and the transfer was cancelled. Luckily I bumped into another gricer who had heard the transfer was back on! Photos from the day can be seen below, with the normal railway running around as well. Click on any of the photos below to view them all Album link - Regards, Kieran Quote

Noel Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Thanks Finbarr. Sone really fabulous photos in there. It's great to see so many interesting loco hauled trains on UK network. One photo in particular over the viaduct was so colour rich it reminded me of a spectacular layout scene. A relief from boring 22k luas trams. I was standing in Athlone marina last week with a great view of the white railway bridge, heard a train approaching the famous bridge, picked up my camera, but put it down without a click when I realised it was a boring tram. Btw, they have fantastic plans for the cycle Greenaway right through the centre of Athlone off the disused mullingar/Athlone line. Quote

thewanderer Posted August 5, 2016 Author Posted August 5, 2016 Evening all, Last Monday I took a trip to the Spa town of Bath for an afternoon of sightseeing. To get to Bath I took a slight detour catching the 1045 Paddington to Swansea as far as Bristol Parkway to enable me to sample the Pullman Restaurant Car on board the service. At Bristol Parkway after a short wait I caught a Class 158 on a Great Malvern to Brighton service to Bath Spa. Once the sighseeing was completed I got a London bound HST as far as Reading where I alighted to see the Retroliveried HST Power Car 43002 in its original HST livery from 1976. I then took the slow route back to London via Staines before heading to Scotland on board the Caledonian Sleeper to Edinburgh. Click http://smu.gs/2aAxTDY to view the images. Quote
thewanderer Posted August 6, 2016 Author Posted August 6, 2016 Afternoon folks, On Saturday Belmond Grand Hibernian liveried 216 was used on the 0935 North Wall - Ballina IWT Liner. This was the first run of the loco on the mainline since repainting into Belmond livery. It still requires branding to be applied. Also pictured were the two Mayo Specials to Heuston for the Mayo - Tyrone Match in Croke Park, Dublin. Click http://smu.gs/2aC9r5a to view. Also the latest batch of photos from my recent UK trip have now been uploaded. These are from Tuesday 2nd August. After arriving in Edinburgh off the Sleeper from London I took an out and back spin to Tweedbank on the recently reopened Borders Railway. Once back in Edinburgh it was time for some sightseeing of the City before taking a trip out to North Queensferry to view the Forth Bridge. Taking 68002 out and back of course on the Scotrail loco hauled turn. Click http://smu.gs/2aCa9zE to view. Quote
