  6. That’s very kind Patrick but if you can use a knife and fork you can do this stuff. Soldering is nowhere near as hard as people think. And a chassis jig is worth the cost - really helps that initial foundation go in.
  7. Thanks @David Holman! The etches are something else as you say. This one is a real piece of history, as I think it might be a really early version……I looked back at your build and the etches are quite different, as these pictures show. Yours are brass but mine are NS. Not only that but the drawing out is very different- look where the rod etches are in each…..I also think the rods have changed slightly, as mine have the joint on the short portion.
  8. By convention, a locomotive is said to exist when her frames are erected. So another engine, is, I suppose, on my roster. A recent and very fortuitous encounter (thanks to a lead from @David Holman) resulted in me effectively being kindly given a very early North Star kit for a Small Tank, provided that I supply motor, wheels, etc and actually build it. So the workbench has been cleared of all else and ‘Lurganboy’ has begun to take shape. I never like to post about locos on here until I have a rolling chassis. And tonight we have…..note the classic SLNC signature piece of rear pair of drivers almost touching….
  9. Absolutely agreed. Really worth spending the price of a kit on tools alone. A must have IMHO is a chassis jig, like the Poppy’s Woodtech one, which will effectively guarantee a rolling chassis first time.
  10. Interestingly Sonic Models are launching an LNER A5.   18. That fits. Loco is shedded at St Rollox. Built in 1957, withdrawn in 1966. Note the Caprotti valve gear.

Know what you mean about 63 - still lots of stuff like Derry Road and Mallow-Waterford, Burma Road etc…but if you were to offer me a week in history to go exploring around, I’d pick 1950 - lots of mileage but also lots of variety, both steam and I/c, not to mention 3’ gauge. Mind you, 1910 also has its attractions - imagine the rainbow parade of trains through Ballysodare……

  21. Some kind of general weed killer is all I know. SLNCR also used the GN train. A circular was sent out to all staff beforehand warning them to cover up all flowers and vegetables at crossing cottages etc. The personnel running the train wore protective gear even back then so must have been pretty noxious stuff.

  23. This is what I would do, if you don’t have the confidence to start from scratch with bare rails and a track gauge. Make a little jig which will allow you to cut lengths of square plastic rod to exactly the requisite height. The jig will ensure consistency. Glue these to a piece of standard sleepered track and secure the whole assembly on your baseboard, making sure it’s dead flat and not twisted. When glue is fully set, snip away the sleepers. That will give you an approximation of the look, whilst ensuring that the gauge is also correct.
  24. He did a PhD in that. To keep subject vaguely on topic, that great Gaeilgeoir Eamon DeV was briefly a Stormont MP for BCDR territory. One of the UUP members for the same constituency was actually a BCDR director. After the closure in 1950, and before the rails were removed in 54-56, he strongly argued that the line should be retained against traffic congestion. Sadly he didn’t prevail …..
