Darius43 Posted September 11, 2022 Author Posted September 11, 2022 (edited) I looked at photos of NR Class 73s and they don’t appear that dirty even around the exhausts. The NVA is used as a brake force runner. Cheers Darius Edited September 11, 2022 by Darius43 1 Quote

Like a lot of NR liveried stock, launched in a blaze of glory to spend a lot of time lying around the place. The only 73's NR have in use now are their 2 Minions - the rebuilt 73/9's 1 Quote
Darius43 Posted September 13, 2022 Author Posted September 13, 2022 (edited) Two of the remaining few bits in the box were these cable drums. I built a “timber” support cradle using cardboard and fine chain to create a wagon load. And installed in a wagon (Parkside Kit). Cheers Darius Edited September 13, 2022 by Darius43 5 Quote

Darius43 Posted September 24, 2022 Author Posted September 24, 2022 Three Base Toys Leyland FG vans improved (I hope) by painting the edges of the window openings with matt black enamel. This disguises the thickness of the plastic body - especially around the cab. I completely disassembled each van to paint the windows, also painting the cab interior, the bumpers and the insides of the wheel arches. The main windows on the crew bus had their sides painted black to reduce the prismatic effect of the thick clear plastic The whole body was sprayed with matt varnish before re-fitting the glazing and reassembly. Darius43 Posted November 4, 2022 Author Posted November 4, 2022 Hattons have recently been selling their O Gauge Gresley Pacifics at approx. half price. I purchased Union of South Africa partly because of the “bargain” price and partly because a friend and I rode behind her on the Bluebell a few years ago. The detail pack was supplied, minus coal load and fall plate so I made replacements. Really pleased although the 3ft length of O gauge track in the photos is all I possess do it’s going to be display cabinet material. Next task is to add the missing cab handrails. Cheers Darius 4 Quote
Georgeconna Posted November 4, 2022 Posted November 4, 2022 Da job, You would be well miffed after paying out the 650 for one when they came out. Goo price now despite their problems. Quote
Darius43 Posted November 5, 2022 Author Posted November 5, 2022 Back in 2002 I took part in a big defence trial at Woomera in South Australia. On a few days off a group of us travelled on the Pichi Richi Railway from Port Augusta to Quorn and back - including a trip on the “Coffee Pot”. When Ixion Models brought out an On30 version several years ago I couldn’t resist… The model is oob apart from my painting the roofs and adding “staining”to the carriage side timber panelling. Darius43 Posted November 8, 2022 Author Posted November 8, 2022 Major refurbishment of the 1970s era Hornby LMS TPO coach into something less toy-like and more presentable. Coach disassembled. Only the chassis and body will be retained - the operating gear, coach ends and glazing will be discarded and the bogies will probably be replaced. Bodyside and roof moulded details carved away and sanded down. Cheers Darius 2 Quote
Darius43 Posted November 9, 2022 Author Posted November 9, 2022 Doors cut out and replaced with plasticard versions. Cheers Darius 2 Quote
Darius43 Posted November 9, 2022 Author Posted November 9, 2022 Incorrect chassis undergibbons removed and big hole filled in. Coach ends blanked off with plasticard and offset gangways attached. Cheers Darius 3 Quote

Galteemore Posted November 10, 2022 Posted November 10, 2022 Amazing how the addition of some bits of detail can really lift and transform a model. This was what so many skilled modellers had to do years ago with basic RTR products - nice to see the old ways on show here ! 1 1 Quote
Darius43 Posted November 14, 2022 Author Posted November 14, 2022 Chassis undergibbons added. Reductor gear door lights added using brass tube and clear LEDs. Cheers Darius 3 Quote
Darius43 Posted November 15, 2022 Author Posted November 15, 2022 Painting completed. Original Hornby bogies temporarily re-fitted. Looks like it is sitting too high on the bogies - replacement Bachmann LMS bogies will be fitted. Cheers Darius 3 Quote

Darius43 Posted November 20, 2022 Author Posted November 20, 2022 (edited) It’s MPD time!!! Construction commenced using a Dapol 60’ LMS coach as the base model. The, interior, glazing, wheels and couplings are discarded. The raised detail on the roof and coach sides is removed and sanded down. The moulded coach floor is removed apart from at the ends. Etched sides removed from the fret and offered up to the coach body. The etched sides are longer than a scale 60’ so I trimmed 3mm off each end to make them just shorter than the Dapol coach. This allows the ends to be sanded round. Cheers Darius Edited November 20, 2022 by Darius43 6 Quote
Darius43 Posted November 20, 2022 Author Posted November 20, 2022 Question. It’s hard to find clear photos of the bogies of MPDs 63-65. Were they like first generation BR DMUs or similar to the earlier MPDs? Cheers Darius Quote
Darius43 Posted November 20, 2022 Author Posted November 20, 2022 Holes cut in coach bodyside to enable flush glazing of new sides. Sides glued to coach body. Etched cab ends laminated to 1mm thick plasticard. Coach ends “thickened” at the roof joint to enable a rounded roof profile to be sanded. Sides and cab ends in place. Cheers Darius 11 Quote

I commissioned the sides and ends from Allen a year or so ago. They are now available on his website. Roof attached and cab/roof edges filled and sanded round. Door hinges and handles attached. The gangways are temporarily attached using black tack. Cheers Darius Edited November 21, 2022 by Darius43 9 Quote

airfixfan Posted November 21, 2022 Posted November 21, 2022 63 to 65 had standard MPD cab ends as above. NIR planned to retain them and 63 and 63 got the Blue and Red livery. 64 was always in Maroon and White in NIR days 4 Quote
