Tullygrainey Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 Very fine. I liked the way A30 just snuck up there! Amazing how the addition of one building makes it begin to feel like a place. Coming together nicely Patrick. Have the seagulls been delivered yet? 1 1 Quote
Patrick Davey Posted August 3, 2023 Author Posted August 3, 2023 They are going to be delivered shortly by a chap called Albert Ross 6 Quote

Patrick Davey Posted August 16, 2023 Author Posted August 16, 2023 5mm foam board is my new favourite material for landscaping. It’s cheap (4 huge sheets currently £12.00 at Hobbycraft), easily cut with a sharp blade and assembles with PVA. Structures are very light and very rigid, an ideal base for building up the terrain. 8 Quote
Patrick Davey Posted August 17, 2023 Author Posted August 17, 2023 Working on the layout this morning and look what the postman delivered!!! Many thanks to John @Mayner of JM Design Model Railways, a very quick delivery all the way from New Zealand! These beautiful models were ordered specifically for this project. 12 1 Quote
Patrick Davey Posted August 17, 2023 Author Posted August 17, 2023 You've heard of folks going snowboarding, or paddle boarding.... well today I went 'foamboarding'..... building up the terrain on my new layout: And as a further indication of the versatility of this material, I found another use for it, as I prepare to exhibit 'Brookhall Mill' on Saturday: More about this last photo tomorrow! 9 Quote
David Holman Posted August 18, 2023 Posted August 18, 2023 Easy to spend a small fortune on custom stock boxes - and understandable given how much we spend on our models! Have found A4 box files work well for wagons and coaches, while containers from The Really Useful Box Co are ideal for locos, once sectionalised with card or foamboard as you have done. 1 1 Quote
Patrick Davey Posted August 18, 2023 Author Posted August 18, 2023 (edited) So I was sorting out the stock & road vehicles for the show on Sunday and arranging it with the foamboard etc into a sturdy box when I realised I had a need for extra space as it all wouldn’t fit on one layer in the box…. foamboard to the rescue again and a little overflow tray was knocked up The box will be used to carry a lot of other essential items for the show. Patrick Davey Posted August 21, 2023 Author Posted August 21, 2023 Nice acquisition at the Belfast show yesterday from the mighty man Chris Dyer! Thanks also to Dave Bracken and Alan for sorting out a slight running issue. 10 Quote
Patrick Davey Posted August 22, 2023 Author Posted August 22, 2023 (edited) After all the excitement of exhibiting Brookhall Mill at the Belfast show, work has resumed on the landscaping of Clogherhead, using 5mm foam board as well as some thin card. Overview: Looking along the beach area: Looking down into the station forecourt: There will be gates here, leading up to a church and cemetery: A small stream will run down from behind the cemetery, under the railway, and into the sea: Looking towards the overbridge: Edited August 22, 2023 by Patrick Davey 9 Quote

Big difference here Patrick is that yours will undoubtedly be excellent if the amazing Brookhall Mill is anything to go by. And you will actually complete yours, with the astounding patience you seem to possess. Mine seemed like a good idea at the time , but then it was cruelly neglected. Hopefully when I see yours done it will give me the kick to complete mine. Hmmm..., those dodgy walls are definitely going anyway. Keep up the good work. 5 Quote

I'd think a less is more approach might be the most effective with just railway buildings, big sky backscene possibly church spire and roofs of buildings in village in background, there is not a lot to be seen along the coast from Rush to Drogheda and Gormonstown Station was a pretty good study in rural seaside isolation. Yaal have to work on the Louth dialect for the railway people and locals, spent a day working with railway people from the area thought they were speaking a foreign language maybe French. 5 1 Quote

Patrick Davey Posted August 29, 2023 Author Posted August 29, 2023 (edited) Had a challenging week with family stuff there so there has been a slight pause in the progress on Clogherhead. But I managed to find a nice distraction: The two vans at the back are the two I received from John @Mayner and the others are @leslie10646's Provincial Wagons kits. All fine models! Patrick Davey Posted August 31, 2023 Author Posted August 31, 2023 (edited) FILE UNDER: HOWLERS Sometimes you just have to put your hands up and admit you made a complete mess of things.... Yesterday, I completed two of @leslie10646's fabulous new GNR wagons, and even if I do say so myself, I didn't do too badly as there was a decent even finish with the Halfords primer, and I took extra care to get the decals positioned properly before sealing everything with matt varnish. So far so good... These were intended for the sand traffic at Clogherhead so I put some of the actual sand into each wagon, thinking it would be a good idea to drop in some dilute PVA glue and let it set overnight...... Sorry Leslie......... Edited August 31, 2023 by Patrick Davey 8 Quote
Patrick Davey Posted August 31, 2023 Author Posted August 31, 2023 But in better news….. I have started applying the hanging basket liner base for the landscape. It looks like a bit of a patchwork quilt just now because I’m using up the offcuts from previous projects, but all will be blended together with scatter material and foliage etc. 9 Quote
skinner75 Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 That's a top tip for a grassy landscape! 1 Quote
