David Holman Posted November 14 Posted November 14 Lovely stuff, as usual - though initially thought Mount Pleasant track was third rail electric until I zoomed in and saw the sleepers. A modelling opportunity for someone, msybe? 1

UTA 1961-xx-CA Larne Harbour PFF387 Interesting to see the Lobitos oil storage tanks on the right. I don't recall seeing any photos of Lobitos rail tank wagons in Ireland, although they had some in GB. Later, Lobitos merged with Burmah, who of course did have rail tank wagons in Ireland, though the terminal was in Cork and I don't think they ever ventured north of the border.

Mol_PMB Posted Sunday at 08:24 Posted Sunday at 08:24 Super photos as ever! Thank you. I particularly like the last one with tail traffic on the railcar set. The (distant) leading car is a Bulleid wedgehead. 1

Naturally, @Mol_PMB I like the tail traffic too - one of my CIE cattle wagons! 1

I'd like to see a signal diagram for Clonakilty Junction - it might explain the double crossover.... And it is supposed to be a junction, no?
Irishswissernie Posted Sunday at 10:25 Author Posted Sunday at 10:25 (edited) The 2 tracks in the foreground are 2 seperate single track routes, left to/from Bantry and Baltimore and right to/from Clonakilty so the crossovers are access for each route to the different platforms. Clonakilty had routes to or from 3 platforms whereas the Bantry route only had the 2 lefthand platform lines. Edited Sunday at 11:32 by Irishswissernie 1

Using a couple of your other photos, here's a view looking the other way: The lines diverged after the bridge, as shown in this IRRS photo taken from the bridge: https://www.flickr.com/photos/irishrailwayarchive/53813452669/ 4 1
Irishswissernie Posted Sunday at 10:39 Author Posted Sunday at 10:39 (edited) Here is a snip from the Geohive IE Map always a useful source for track plans. THe 'Arrow ' on the bridge handily shows the where the photo was taken from. Edited Sunday at 10:40 by Irishswissernie 4 1

That looks very like the Slieve Blooms in the background when viewed from the Portlaoise area. Picture could be taken out near Clonkeen (Coolnamona) looking toward Ballyfin. 1 1
leslie10646 Posted yesterday at 00:03 Posted yesterday at 00:03 Thank you @Irishswissernie and @Mol_PMB, that's crystal clear and makes sense - although I wonder how often they were used ........
David Holman Posted yesterday at 07:08 Posted yesterday at 07:08 Interesting to see how tidy and, especially litter free the 1950s pictures are. These days we are plagued by the stuff, most of it take away food packaging. Which only goes to show how society has changed in recent years and, let's face it, how lazy society has become... 1 1
Branchline121 Posted 22 hours ago Posted 22 hours ago I'm sure there would've been just as much litter as there is now had there been the same amount of plastic bottles/packaging. 1
