BosKonay Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Interesting is the word for it Learned my lesson - am ballasting now using a 'chunk' of 2x2 to stand in for the platforms, and will then carefully place the platforms back in once the ballast is all set and happy Quote
RedRich Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Where are you finding the time, it's really looking good. Rich, Quote
BosKonay Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 As Glenderg aptly described a few posts back, I'm taking a 'gardening' approach. Half an hour here, an hour there It's amazing how the time adds up, and even an hour can make a big difference to the layout Plus I have modelbaseboard Dave putting me under pressure now, building a vast bridge over the stairwell, only to add a vast viaduct and return loop and fiddle yard! All going well, I'll be able to run trains in circles by Christmas Quote
BosKonay Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Actually one little 'tip' I'm happy to share.... In the earlier days, I found myself having too much fun opening stock boxes and playing trains So, about two months back, I disconnected all the sections and haven't re-done the wiring yet The result is that, as it's about 15 minutes work to hook up all the sections and blocks again, the whole thing has been unpowered for 8 weeks, and I actually make progress That said, I haven't yet laid any new sections, as that would require the wiring live again to verify shorts I'd highly recommend that if you have work / scenics to crack on with - hide the transformer :) Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 All going well, I'll be able to run trains in circles by Christmas You need to rephrase that Stephen the kids will be running trains and Daddy will be a by stander Quote

BosKonay Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 ROFL, I reckon you're right there Anthony The kids will be racing Thomas and Percy with Mr. TGV and their favourite Lima Deltic :) Quote
BosKonay Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Should do Will have some photos of the bridge tomorrow! Quote
ttc0169 Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Your forthcoming De Dietrich set will also look great on the layout.. Quote
Guest hidden-agenda Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Dave,s timber bridge will look 1st class i cant wait to see it. Quote
BosKonay Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Bare and looking a little nude, but thought it would share how Dave crossed a 7 foot wide, top of the attic stairwell gap, giving me full use of the attic for layout!! :) If you have a wierd space, if you're not sure what to do, if you don't think a baseboard is possible!! ..... you know who to call! (Dave ) Quote
Glenderg Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Sweeeeeeeeet! You planning any fancy LED/Flux Capacitor things - (signals?) to remind you the gate is locked before your stock flies off at a nice rate of descent? Quote
BosKonay Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 A microswitch in the closing hinge of the bridge will control power to the entire mainline section, the entire bridge and at least 3 feet either side of the wall Bridge open, no power, bridge closed, power That's the theory anyway Quote
Guest hidden-agenda Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 MAGIC. Full credit to Dave. Quote
Dave Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Thanks lads, I'm very happy at the way it turned out. Wait till ye see the next section with a mother of a viaduct! Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012  Don't forget to video the first train crossing Quote
Broithe Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Don't forget to video the first train crossing One of these, to be safe..? Quote
BosKonay Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Lol, nice one Broithe! The mainline is still a few metres away, working its way to the Blackroad Road branch at the moment! Will need to knuckle down and crack on to get the main loop in place before Dave is back with more boards!! (can't keep up with the man!) Quote
BosKonay Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 So far this is my favourite shot I can just picture it with lighting on the bridge, the deck ballasted, the side walls painted up in concrete and a 201 at the head of a DD set powering across Quote
Broithe Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Ask her if it's OK to put a mirror on the ceiling.. ..and when she's calmed down, tell her it's on the landing you mean, just to watch the trains... Got to be done. Quote

Kirley Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 A microswitch in the closing hinge of the bridge will control power to the entire mainline section, the entire bridge and at least 3 feet either side of the wall Bridge open, no power, bridge closed, power That's the theory anyway Your bridge is a great idea, looking forward to seeing it operational. I am interested in your micro switch as I would like to use one on my layout, can you provide more details please? Quote
BosKonay Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Basically, the microswitch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniature_snap-action_switch will sit on the dropping section, so that when the bridge drops away, the switch loses contact. The entire bridge section and the previous track segment (outside the walls) are one isolateed section. Power to them runs through the microswitch. So, if the bridge is open, the circuit is broken and there is no power to the entire section and for 3-4 feet beyond the bridge entrance walls. Bridge closed, switch closed, circuit is powered. Quote
heirflick Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 bos, in truth , was that your idea or daves? had agreat chat about your layout at the show...sounds very impressive - like every lads dream - except yours came true! (ya lucky so and so!) Quote
BabyGM Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Very impressive stuff How do you plan to lay track, solder wires ect? Quote
BosKonay Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 The bridge is easily enough accessed, so I plan to lay the woodlands foam and lay the track as normal on top. Power will be fed from the 'outside' sides of the bridge looped through the microswitch so no need to drill the bridge. The whole lot then will, in time, be ballasted in and painted up to look like a concrete structure heirflick - a bit of both, tho DartStation of this parish is to blame for the seed of the idea :) And you are dead right about the dream and the lucky bit :) Quote
Kirley Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Thanks Stephen for the information on the microswitch, now I'll have to go searching on the Net for one Quote
Dave Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 I think I have a pair of micro switches, I deffo have one, I have a dig in the workshop tomorrow. Your both welcome to them. Quote
BosKonay Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Yer a gentleman!! The rest of ye - enter into the free baseboard competition quick smart so you can appreciate this man's amazing work! http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/showthread.php/1104-Win-a-free-baseboard! Thanks Dave for the kind offer, I was looking on the internet, £1.60 including postage, where as postage from your location would probably cost more. Thanks anyway. Quote
