roxyguy Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Hi All, Just bought a kit for ten euros on the bay to remotor the old lima pancake, looks like a very simple conversion that someone like me could handle. Anybody ever do this before? Want to remotor my Irish class 33's. Quote
Dave Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Where did you get them from, I have two Lima class 55's that I want to overhaul. Quote
WRENNEIRE Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Be careful, I re motored a 201 with one of these motors and it ran very hot after a few minutes I was told they were from cameras, and were not supposed to be used at any speed for a long time Quote
Glenderg Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I got a few from Modeltorque a few years ago, and noticed no improvement on running ability at all. As far as I know the motor itself is identical to the ones in DVD/CD drives but as Dave rightly says, they're designed for short burst operation, rather than continuous use. A quick google using the terms "modeltorque dvd drive" should inform further. Quote

roxyguy Posted February 16, 2016 Author Posted February 16, 2016 Hi all, thanks for the great feedback, I knew it was CD player motor but didn't think it might overheat so thanks for the heads up! The listen is now gone from ebay - although it was an Irish seller. Still for 10euros I'll give it a go! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111881825190?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Quote
Noel Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I though a CD or DVD motor would normally be run for a long time at a constant speed but very low loading. Quote
Glenderg Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 It's used for opening and closing the drawer, not spinning the disc. Quote
Broithe Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 It's used for opening and closing the drawer, not spinning the disc. "Spinning the disc" sounds so Olde Worlde now.... Quote
roxyguy Posted February 16, 2016 Author Posted February 16, 2016 I think we need the spinmaster Quote
jhb171achill Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Superb! Dealing with people on a daily basis from the U S and A, yes, that's what they're like. Very nice people, not at all like stereotypes (but then, nor are we), but a very, very different sense of humour to us..... Their sense of humour is simplistic, cautious and conservative for the most part. And greatly tempered with their obsession with the "PC" culture of ensuring you don't offend anyone, no matter how wacko their ideas and sensitivities, before you get out of bed in the morning..... Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 I've used Modeltorque on a few of my Limas. I've had no issues running them on DCC Quote
RobertRoche Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 I have used one branded as Susumotor in my Lima 33. It seems to work well, but didn't improve running. The chassis is still shaky and probably no better than a cleaned up pancake. Give it a go, it's pretty easy to do. Quote

Toys designed for the 70s to go roundy roundy at high speed and make little boys faint with excitement. Quote
roxyguy Posted February 17, 2016 Author Posted February 17, 2016 Yes indeed, my class 33's run like that too and wobble also! Quote
Noel Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Yes indeed, my class 33's run like that too and wobble also! Yip one of mine wobbles too but the other doesn't. Mine are 'dog' rough runners and impossible to operate at prototypical manoeuvring speeds. They be great if they were for scalextric Quote
roxyguy Posted February 18, 2016 Author Posted February 18, 2016 Rather than use on my irish class 33's. I've bought a cheap 'non runner' BR one for 12quid on the bay. Gonna re-motor with the kit and spray it silver and decal it as a faux - A class, early livery. Just a cheap, simple little project to match my skill set. Will post some pictures. Thanks for all the feedback. Quote

Yes, that HST used a motoer form a cd drive. I gave it a good run after installation and never noticed the motor overheating to any degree..... Quote
grandad Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Have you tried http://www.diesel-trains.co.uk/Lima_replacement_motor_kits.html? I haven't used them, but found the site when I thought that I may need to get a replacement in the future. Quote
roxyguy Posted February 18, 2016 Author Posted February 18, 2016 I've seen those guys, but twith sterling and postage its not that cheap. The one I bought was 10euros including postage. However if it works out I'd be tempted to their motor for the old lima 201, so we'll see. Quote

Andy Cundick Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 It might be worth bearing in mind that High Level do replacement motor bogies for Lima both 8 and 10 foot, they only take an evening to knock up and the running is infinitely better and just as easy to build to 21mm gauge.Andy. Quote
grandad Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Glad you mentioned High Level Kits. Yes, their motor bogies are great. I have used 2 so far, one to remotor a Triang Blue Pullman and one for a tender drive for a Crampton model. Their gearboxes are good as well. Quote
grandad Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 PS, thank you Garfields Ghost for your welcome. Quote
roxyguy Posted February 22, 2016 Author Posted February 22, 2016 Interesting video about getting the most out of a pancake. Long, but interesting. I repeated this process with my class 33 'non runner' and was really surprised by how nicely it ran. I'll still remotor it with the kit though to see how much of an improvement it could make. Quote
Noel Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 The video clip reminded me of "Bob" from the fast show Quote
roxyguy Posted February 22, 2016 Author Posted February 22, 2016 The video clip reminded me of "Bob" from the fast show Brilliant, had forgotten about Bob Fleming! Haha. But yes it has a certain fastshow feel to it. Quote

roxyguy Posted March 10, 2016 Author Posted March 10, 2016 New motor fitted, body sprayed to look look faux A class, early livery. Bit of soldering now. Nice rainy day activity. Quote
roxyguy Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 Running with new motor. Runs lovely and smooth at 25% power +, which is probably a bit too quick for a small layout like mine. A lot quieter and less smelly than a pancake. Smooth crawl still not possible. Overall for a ten euro fix I am very pleased. Quote

BosKonay Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Have you got a video +1 - definitely, I've an aging (but still pretty) Lima fleet I'd love to put back into service... Quote
roxyguy Posted March 19, 2016 Author Posted March 19, 2016 Hi all, see video. Train at speeds from 10%-20% on controller. My old limas won't even budge at anything under 50%! so this impressed me. The slow crawl at 10% isn't bad either and much, much quieter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwPhGTwVWL8&feature=youtu.be Quote
