jhb171achill Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Which reminds me...... I was sitting minding my own business in an 80 on my way home from work one time and there had been some sort of "do" somewhere, and the train was full - as were many of the passengers. Sitting opposite me, and across in the adjacent seating bay, were a group of Scottish gentlemen. Well, they were Scottish. They were very drunk, very abusive, shouting sectarian obscenities, and using the foullest of language in front of young mothers and children. The conductor would have been unable to tackle them alone, but before he got the chance, the train stopped routinely at Finaghy. A group of large, well built, local males approached them and left them in no doubt as to how many of their limbs would be broken in many parts, if not severed, if they did not get off the train. Here. Right NOW. Given the nature of what they had been shouting about, Finaghy was probably not the best place for them to go sightseeing. It was still during the "Troubles". They got off the train, and the local youths got a vigorous round of applause..... Quote
heirflick Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 kirley....you never cease to amaze me with the quality of your work - well done! Quote
Kirley Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 While working on my Class 80 build Glenderg contacted me about his new innovation, windows with frames and glazing bars. You have to paint them and they are applied on the outside of the window but because of their extreme thinness they look flush with the window frame. I have two Class 80's an MIR Set and one built by Colin Smith of Bangor plus the Set I am building. Both sets has Lima internal grazing which means the "glass" is on the inside of the window. I decided to try Glenderg's grazing and ordered windows for all three Sets. The painting of the windows took me a bit of practice but as I moved onto my second coach I was getting the hang of it. I'm very pleased with the results and am looking forward to see how they turn out on the new 80 Class Set I'm working on. Quote

I loaded the containers with lead airgun pellets for weight. Timber wagons painted. Timber loads were built around foam squares to reduce the overweight and to stop these wagons being too heavy. Wagons loaded. Container Wagons in action. Timber train passing. Close up of the pocket wagons. The Wagon Project took a lot longer than I had anticipated and I am happy to move on to my Hunslet rake project. Quote
rebelred Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Hi Kirley, wagons are fab by the way.im just wondering are the containers made from those card kits or are they plastic containers?? Are those card kit ones any good? Didn't want to buy some until I know what they are like. Quote
Kirley Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 Those are from a long way back, the one's in the above pictures are plastic. Card Containers are not as good but with a little bit of work can look passable and are a lot cheaper of course. Quote
Kirley Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 Welcome on board Colin, you should start your own Workbench so that others can see your work. Did you hand paint the crest by the way, it looks great. Quote
Riversuir226 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Excellent work Kirley the attention to detail will make all the difference to the end result Quote
73.River.Roe. Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 yes Kieran crest was hand painted and what a job it was to do so I just done one and the other I fitted NIR motif. Quote
73.River.Roe. Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 glad you like nelson I see you bought the worsley works 70 class sides remember the power car is almost 64 feet long and centre coach and driving trailers are 57 feet long the comet coaches do perfect underframes for them and ends too also roof sections... Quote
Kirley Posted May 8, 2014 Author Posted May 8, 2014 Progress is slow and things still to do seems endless. One of the effects of changing the window layout from the original Mk II design is that seating and door entrances are different. Removing tables, cutting the seating and manufacturing new door entrances, toilet compartments has taken a good few hours. I also had to build a Drivers compartment for the Driving Trailer As I'm using a Bachmann's Class 150 chassis for the Power Car there will be no room to model it's interior. Quote
burnthebox Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Bloody hell Kirley, slow down man, you'er putting BR to shame, Quote
heirflick Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Hi Kieran my 70 Class... Colin. absolute beauties - well done sir! Quote
Weshty Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Niiiiiice!!!! Love the embankment detail and underweeded permanent way. Quote
Weshty Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 This is the way I got the Resin bodies, I had to supply the chassis and piping. Richie- I hope to put up a video after they are weathered. Heirflick- on reflection I should have done some in the earlier livery as I have a small rake of MIR Bubbles but the desire of having a long rake of bubbles won over. That is a fine rake, and looking well! Quote
73.River.Roe. Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Thank you Heirflick I appreciate the comments. Colin. Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Looking good K hopefully will get up to you to see these in the flesh soon Quote
Hunslet 102 Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Workbench looking as busy as ever Kieran, like the look of those windows from Glenderg, they set the railcars off well.I see you have managed to get Colin unto the site, just saw his 70 class build on this thread, looking good.Keep up the good work Kieran Quote
Kirley Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 Finally, finally completed my Class 80 build. Just waiting on decals arriving, then applying them, varnishing before finally adding Glenderg's windows to complete. It's a great feeling to have finished, well almost but of course now it's on the next project. Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Looking good K can't wait to see it finished with Glendergs glazing. Quote
Kirley Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 While hard to find the odd MIR wagon kit pops up from time to time. I picked up a started Fertilizer Wagon and a CIE 4 Wheel Flat Wagon in which there was bits missing. Both were white metal kits. Last night I finally got round to making a start on them and got them to primer stage today. Missing bits replaced with plasticard. Found some extra bits from another kit. A finishing coat, couplings and decals to finish. Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Some rare kits there K any further updates on the finished wagons. Quote
Kirley Posted June 9, 2014 Author Posted June 9, 2014 any further updates on the finished wagons. QUOTE] The wagons are on the "back burner" as I'm working on some MPD's. As you can see above the is a lot of "Cutting & Shutting" to be done. Nearly every one of these MPD's were different. Power Cars will have Black Beetle Motors fitted, a first for me trying out these motors. Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 The MPD's are taking shape nicely K Quote
Hunslet 102 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Great start with the MPDs Kieran, looking forward to their progress, your efforts might be the boot I need to get my own started. Quote
Kirley Posted June 15, 2014 Author Posted June 15, 2014 Decals added as well as Glenderg's windows so it was time for a test run of No 69. Quote
David Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Lovely model Kieran. Are the windows on that set the same Glenderg ones? Quote
richrua Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I admire your tons of work Mr Kirley. I copied your timber wagon design. Just a question - did you make the little ladders or can I get them somewhere? Quote
Kirley Posted June 16, 2014 Author Posted June 16, 2014 Are the windows on that set the same Glenderg ones? Thanks David, all my Class 80's have windows supplied by Glenderg. Quote
Kirley Posted June 16, 2014 Author Posted June 16, 2014 did you make the little ladders or can I get them somewhere? They were made a long time ago, I think they were left overs from Dapol C43 Prestwin Twin Silo Cement Wagon Plastic Kit, that I bought just for the chassis. Quote

Can't wait to see these finished; must dig out my 80% complete suburban MPD after seeing these! Really like how you're tackling the sides for the later cars, to get the slim windows - great job! Minor points of detail - from studying pics, the MPD's big sliding brake compartment doors, when closed, always seemed to sit flush, in UTA green days - the recessed appearance seemed to start in the NIR maroon & grey era, for some reason. And I don't think the slam-door suburban cars ever carried corridor connections, until after they were rebuilt as open configuration with mostly new side panels - they just had three windows in front, like this one: Edited June 30, 2014 by 33lima Quote
