Some set up you have there Eoin now. Some of that gear I did not know even existed! Thanks George, I'm hoping an impression of the planking will show through the canvas! A lot of the tools I have are from the 1:1 scale and engineering projects, they work equally as well on the smaller stuff, like model trains- one cannot have enough tools...... Eoin Quote
jhb171achill Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 Sublime, as always. I don't believe I've ever seen better brass kit work.... 1 Quote

murrayec Posted August 30, 2021 Author Posted August 30, 2021 Chassis & body brass work coming to completion;- Setting up to install Dapol NEM pocket fittings, the chassis mounting part is folded up and a 3.15mm styrene mounting spigot prepared to joy rig the pocket to access the correct level and decide what mods are needed. The drag beam overlay parts, buffers, vac pipes and hooks are prepared for soldering. After assessing the coupler height this is the mod done to the mounting plate- 3.4mm cut off the upstands to set the correct coupler level. After the drag beam detail overlay, the buffers, the hook, and the modified plate are soldered on, a brass 3.15mm spigot tapped 10BA to mount the coupler and a 1mm wire stop to hold the Dapol spring plate on centre were made up. Parts soldered on and a 10BA screw prepared for the fixing. Mounted. Verified. The gas light roof pipe was next- to keep the roof removable the pipe needs to separate from the end down pipe so I decided to use a .4mm bore pipe to do this. The pipe is held with two .3mm split pins soldered on the coach end, so I made up a batch of pins by half filing .3mm brass wire n folding over to create the pins. Pins fitted to the down pipe, which will thread through .4mm holes drilled in the end plate and soldered on the inside. Gas down pipe and end handrails ready to be soldered on. Done. The solder wicked through the split pins and soldered the pipe in the pin heads. Next is the coach air vents, these parts are folded and stuck in place with epoxy glue. After folding, the parts need a rub with a file to remove the fret part which helps the folding process but leaves tabs on the top edge. Stuck on. Emergency brake parts are stuck on with epoxy glue also. The vac pipes are now soldered on with 70deg solder to the side of the coupler chassis bracket. The upstand pipe is supposed to lean over like that! And finally the last parts to the chassis- the lower side step/running boards. That completes the chassis and roof which are now ready to start painting. The body requires the internal partitions and then its ready for painting also. Two of the four coaches are at this stage..... another two to go!! Eoin 12 2 Quote
popeye Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 Perfect, there's a lot of fiddly detail parts to go on and they take time but they are worth it in the end. I usually keep my couplers nearly level with the buffers and they work fine, it also keeps everything close together. 2 Quote

Yes, the coach in the photos was the first attempt on positioning the couplers. I have now cnc'd out a revised brass mounting bracket to pull the couplers back in closer to the buffer line- though the Dapol assembly conflicts with the bogie frames now! so the second coach at this stage of the build is the test bed to come up with a solution...... popeye Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 Sometimes I cut the coupling where the red line is in the picture and make a new hole where the red spot is. It might keep it away from the axle. I use different methods depending on how much room I have. 1 Quote

That's most likely what I will do, with the new mounting plate and a new hole as you suggest keeps the coupler away from hitting the bogie. Eoin 1 Quote
popeye Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 I don't use the little spring piece, and screw the coupling down tight so there is no sideways movement. 1 Quote
murrayec Posted November 22, 2021 Author Posted November 22, 2021 This is how I resolved the coupler issue;- Using the mounting part from the kit I cut it down to suit the Dapol coupler height. Then cut back the sides 6mm from the front along the half etch line and folded them in under the coupler fixing plate. This allows the bogie frame to swing in above the mounting plate without obstruction. Testing the bogie swing and locating the position to solder the coupler mounting to the chassis. Tapped spigots made up and using the offcuts to hold the Dapol spring plate in position. Soldered up. Soldered onto the chassis with coupler installed. This setup now has the coupler box flush with the buffer beam. Eoin. 2 1 Quote
murrayec Posted March 18, 2022 Author Posted March 18, 2022 I have neglected to post photos on this thread for a while! So all the coaches are now assembled except for the last few parts described below. The final soldered brass parts gone on - lamps on the roof of the duckets. Cutting out the compartment partitions in .5mm styrene sheet. Test fitted, I'm going to paint these separately and then glue them in. This will help with the coach internal wall painting and fitting the glazing. Fresh from the mini sandblaster. Nice silky finish perfect for paint..... ......after a good wash though. All washed with warm water water n washing soda. Etch primer applied, a very light coat, just enough so that one can still see the brass under. Seats and partitions undercoated with grey enamel. Just shown one of the 4 coaches, getting through it and colour will be next....... Eoin. 9 Quote
murrayec Posted October 16, 2022 Author Posted October 16, 2022 After a small little accident (not going to discuss here) we'r now back on track;- All the kits have had their interiors, partitions, seats, roof, chassis, and bogies painted. Some final filling on the brake/3rd roof where the birdcage was not installed. After the interior was painted cream the roof underside was masked off to paint the topside satin black. The black finish returns around the edge to the underside as the roof has a slight overhang over the body sides! This coach will be the worst kept of the 4 so a light wood brown under coat was used to simulate wood. Some weathering was was applied to give a bit of variation to the wood. Then lumps of maskol were applied to do the paint rip thing on the roof and the chassis. The body will be done later as the green paint is applied. Satin black top coat applied and Maskol removed, more weathering will be done later to complete the buzz. Just about to start the green........ Eoin 9 2 Quote

murrayec Posted February 27, 2023 Author Posted February 27, 2023 With a break from modelling over Christmas and my place turned upside down due to a housing development going on beside me, I've got very little done on these models! Though back into it now...... All masked up and ready for a bit of green. Maskol was applied for the badly kept coach! Base green undercoat applied. Two satin top coats applied. Humbrol discontinuing their enamel paint range is a pain in the ass! All my colour mixes from over the years are now redundant and I have to start all over again....... Eoin. 4 2 Quote

Humbrol don’t really tell anyone about the cancer causing agent in there paint until the new EU rule came in and suddenly stopped it. Even marks models were supprised to find they were given little notice that they couldn’t sell it anymore… cosches look deadly. Particularly in Green 1 1 Quote

murrayec Posted March 7, 2023 Author Posted March 7, 2023 All masked up for painting the coach ends, Maskol was applied to the brake coach ends for weathering. Painted two coats of Satin black. Maskol being removed. Some internal paint touch ups is required, but ready for door handles and lining. Eoin. 6 Quote
murrayec Posted April 5, 2023 Author Posted April 5, 2023 Railtec decal lining & numbers going on;- Decals complete with a few coats of lacquer applied. I stuck to Railtec's instructions and stayed away from the 'Micro' solutions, but had a difficult time getting the decal lining to sit down over the panel details, used Humbrol Decalfix to assist in the end! Setting up the wheel axles, by cutting off the pin point ends and filing to size. Wheels being weathered before fitting to the chassis, this is the first coat of 'rust' applied. The cardboard masks were cut out on the Cameo Silhouette cutting machine- faster than using masking tape! Eoin. 3 Quote

The very very subtly faded look of the paintwork is just about as 100% photo-perfect as it's possible to get. The detailing is exquisite..... 1 1 Quote
murrayec Posted March 19 Author Posted March 19 Another project back on the workbench after a modelling brake looking after family and the house;- First layer of weathering added to the chassis, this coach is the heavy weathered one, the other three will be lightly done. Wheels on, the wheel sets are held in place by a .5mm brass wire epoxied on. Partitions and seats installed. Roof gas supply pipe installed. The four coaches are now ready for final weathering and lacquering, then the windows and door handles will be installed........ Nearly complete!! Eoin. 8 6 Quote
jhb171achill Posted March 19 Posted March 19 Outstanding as always! Love the scruffy looking roof - the upholstery in those compartments will have a very musty smell (I remember this in old UTA steam-era coaches!) 1 Quote
