minister_for_hardship Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 3. How many rail termini had Cork city, like? There was 9 termini 10 if you include the tram depot. 1. Victoria - terminal before the tunnel was built. 2. Penrose Quay (before Glanmire rd.) 3. Summerhill. 4. Glanmire Rd (Kent) 5. Albert Quay. 6. Albert st. 7. Victoria Rd. 8. Capwell. 9. Western Rd. The Midleton line also terminated at different locations during its construction but mostly outside the city limits. Full marks and a bonus biccie for that man, anyone care to have a punt at 2. and the coat of arms that I had in mind in 1.? Quote
BosKonay Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Re-listing the questions for those lazier than me New ones: 1. What (pre-GSR) railway company had the Irish langauge featured in their coat of arms? 2. What was the only location where all 6 patterns of miniature ETS could be found, and no, it's not Castlerea! 3. How many rail termini had Cork city, like? 4. According to legend, what item did OVS Bulleid propose to put in every CIE loco cab, but loco crews objected to his proposal? Quote
Weshty Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Full marks and a bonus biccie for that man, anyone care to have a punt at 2. and the coat of arms that I had in mind in 1.? The irony. Rebel Capital and four references to the Sax-Coburns.... Quote
scahalane Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 The irony. Rebel Capital and four references to the Sax-Coburns.... Well if they can change the entire name of a town (Cove) to suit her visit. I'm sure a few station names was loose change! Quote
heirflick Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 the coat of arms that I had in mind in 1.? total shot in the dark - the Tralee and Dingle? Quote
Mayner Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Looks like your right Seamus the coat of arms is on the cover of "The Dingle Train". Quote
snapper Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Which pre gsr railway company is still listed on the London stock exchange? Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 (edited) total shot in the dark - the Tralee and Dingle? Spot on. Includes a scroll with 'Bothar Iarainn Traighli agus an Daingean' (sp.?) on it. It was carried on some locos on cab side sheets, but not on the coaches as its modern day reincarnation. Now for Q2. minister_for_hardship Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 I'll put everyone out of their misery, answer is Athenry, had all patterns from A - F at one time. One for the road, what was the longest lived Irish railway company? Quote

jhb171achill Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Shortest lived Irish railway company or administrative body? Quote
108 Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 GNRB only lasted 5 years but I'd be very surprised if that was the shortest lived. Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 (edited) Shortest lived Irish railway company or administrative body? Pure guess....Great Southern Railway (in the singular)? 12th Nov '24 to 1st Jan '25. Haven't got the foggiest on the signal one, signalling isn't my strong suit. Edited September 2, 2013 by minister_for_hardship Quote
Mayner Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Possibly Ulster Transport Railways during the hand-over from UTA to NIR, The GNRB was only dissolved when CIE took over The County Donegal Railway's road transport services in the early 1970s Quote
Glenderg Posted September 2, 2013 Author Posted September 2, 2013 Not even a single guess. Askeaton, Co. Limerick? Quote
snapper Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Askeaton, Co. Limerick? Nope, this signal is colour light and is still in daily use on an open line I will give you the answer tomorrow morning. Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 While we're waiting for that, what system used the odd gauge of 2 ft 11 and a half inches? Quote
Broithe Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 While we're waiting for that, what system used the odd gauge of 2 ft 11 and a half inches? Cork tramways? I think they were really 900 mm.... Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Cork tramways? I think they were really 900 mm.... Yes so that (in theory) 3' stock of the Muskerry and Passage could run on C.E.T.& L. Co. tramway rail. No-one had mm's back then, except those French cheese eaters. Quote
jhb171achill Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Now that's one I didn't know, Minister.... Quote
jhb171achill Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Minister correct, Mayner's answer an interesting one too. Another short lived one was the Northern Railway, in between the Ulster Railway / INW and the GNR (I).... Quote
josefstadt Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I'll put everyone out of their misery, answer is Athenry, had all patterns from A - F at one time. A - to Galway B - to Ennis (long section) C - Gort D - Woodlawn (long section) E - Attymon F - Tuam Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 (edited) Now that's one I didn't know, Minister.... Would have been a handy way to get a new loco or stock from a ship on the quays to Western Rd, don't know if was ever done though. The tramway/Muskerry rails were quite close, but not connected near the gates of UCC. Edited September 3, 2013 by minister_for_hardship Quote
jhb171achill Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I did have it mind that they weren't connected, but obviously a transfer could have been effected, albeit awkwardly, using rollers and adjacent tracks! Nothing as awkward as the Waterford and Tramore, though, where a wall had to be knocked down and rebuilt for stock transfer purposes... Quote
scahalane Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Where on the network can you see a signal with two separate heads that show the same aspect, and it is not a banner repeater? Wild guess, is it the one on approach to Cork station on the Midleton line?? Quote
snapper Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 Wild guess, is it the one on approach to Cork station on the Midleton line?? Nope, it’s in Kildare. It is on the middle road heading for Dublin. The first head is gantry and the second head is on the ground below it. It is to give drivers heading towards Dublin a better view of the signal than is blocked by the foot bridge. You can see it in this video at about 30 seconds. Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 What railway's original coaching stock had doors on one side only? Quote
josefstadt Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 What railway's original coaching stock had doors on one side only? The Listowel & Ballybunion? Quote
minister_for_hardship Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 The Listowel & Ballybunion? No, the L&B would have to have doors on both sides. Clues within the question would be; it would have had platforms all on the one side and that the original stock became time-expired and it received conventional 2-sided stock at some point. Quote
