I came across an old copy of the CIÉ staff newspaper, Nuacht, dated January 1976. It had a feature on new trucks beingput into service at that time which might be of interest to those modelling that era. I had to scan it in three sections, due to the size of the original, so there is some overlap between the images:

Beautiful stuff, can we please have some more!!!!!!

Three great truck marques Bedford, AEC & Guy. The Guy Big J artics lasted a long tie possibly into IE day.

Its interesting that the road freight division seems to have preferred AEC over Leyland although it was all part of BMC/BL

EFE have rigid and artic versions of the AEC/Leyland Ergonomic & Bedford TK flat beds and vans, I think Corgi do a Big J tractor andtraier unit.

Perhaps its time for an EFE or Corgi limited run CIE truck set.

Are there any models of Volvo F10's or MAN F8's in OO gauge?

Looking for something to haul 40' BELLS and most of the vehicles I see are too modern

Also would like a nice 3 axel container chassis on them

Maybe Santa at this stage?

There is a OO Scale kit of a Volvo F12 made by Knightwing. They also do DAF 2800s, Mercs and Fodens as well as trailers. http://www.knightwing.co.uk/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?product=OO-HO_Road_Transport_Kits&cart_id=1387288810.325

Another truck photo found in Nuacht dated June 1977. This one is from ttc's neck of the woods. <img src="http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=10830"/><img src="http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=10831"/>

I remember it well hauling various M,C and SS type buses back to Ballina over the years but never knew that it was designed and built in Ballina, thanks for sharing the article Stephen.

Could just be the trailer that was owned by CIE, if even that..

Keep splitting those hairs Ed! :P

There was some F88s owned by CIE as I have seen pics of them, but you're right. The pic is too blurry to tell if this was CIE owned. Something a bit different on the CIE theme anyway.

Hi Lads, my father worked in CIE road freight in the Brodstone Depot in the 60s,70s and early 80s. He drove all of these trucks. The Volvo f88 and trailer was owned be CIE. They introduce it in the mid 70s to deliver Irish Beef to Spain ,France, holland, Italy, and bring fruit back to the markets in Dublin on the return trip. He and other drivers where on a panel in Brodstone Depot and where rostered  to drive this and another f88 and trailer at the time.

This is an interesting topic. Depending on whether we model, say, 1955-60, 1965-70, 1980 or whenever, the vehicles are extremely different. Someone with suitable knowledge might put together a brief guide to what types of vehicles were to be seen in each decade.....?

Same with UTA lorries...

Those markings on the cab side appear like a PR shot - time  to Dublin, Distance to Dublin, that kind of thing. Bragging rights, not a livery as such.

Here's the actual livery.

It was defo a PR shot, and they all got CIE orange as per your pic, originally with CIE roundels, then IR after 87 when they were getting long in the tooth. Most of the fleet was Leyland at that time, with some Guy thrown in for good measure. However, the British made trucks were being left behind at that time by the Europeans, especially for the long distance work, hence buying the Volvos, though I'm sure a Leyland Marathon and a Ford Transcontinental was trialed by CIE around this time.

The next significant fleet tender went to Bedford, always amazed that Hino didnt get it, considering how popular they were becoming at the time.

Great to see the Volvo F88 in CIE / IR livery!

Were there ever any 1981 Dodge C38's in Ireland?

1981, technically not seventies, but close enough.

I have one or two cabs that have been retired, and am wondering what may become of them:

Could be wrong, but I don’t remember ever seeing anything here made by Dodge.

Ah crap.

Seem to be a very Spanish thing, and seem very similar aesthetically to the Renault D38.

Dodge C38 was Spanish built, a few made it to the UK, but not here. Too much market opposition

Plenty of Dodge Commandos and 100's here (UK Built) along with the smaller 50 series trucks back in the day, a few preserved Commandos and 100's too. Matchbox made them both in close to 1/76 scale, can be used for layouts

So at a stretch, a UK operator may have sent something over on the ferry?

Will do some digging.

A very big stretch - probably unlikely but theoretically possible.

But it’s your layout, so Rule 1 applies!

Here's a photo of one of the UK Dodge C38's mentioned by @Blaine:

Spanish Dodge C38

In the comments underneath that photo on FlickR, there are several UK models listed. Click on the photo to see the comments.

There's also the very similar Renault D38, which may be more likely to have made it to Ireland.

Didn't @warb or somebody post photos of Renault Jacob's Biscuits trucks before?

EDIT: Found the Jacob's photos I was thinking of. Newer Renaults. Boooo!

Hi all,

I'm on the hunt for my dad’s old ford truck. He drove it from 1976 for about 10 years. Sadly he passed away in July and I would love to find it. I know its probable scrapped but you never know.

Here is a picture if it when it was delivered in 1976 and a picture of a model that the son of a friend of his made, the Reg was 603 VZA and the fleet number was FHA1

Thanks a mil

Éamonn
