enniscorthyman Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 I spent some time in the cold and damp shed tonight and did a bit of work on the cement bubble.I am trying to use as much as the parts that come with the prestwin kit as possible, and along with some some brass wire and scrap brass parts.I know the SSM kit would save time, but i am keen to see how this bubble turns out when finished and see what ye guys think of it. Glenderg Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Superb! Mind if i add those tips to my "tutorial"? Richie Quote
heirflick Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 'I spent some time in the cold and damp shed tonight....' be honest Eamonn-you were in the dog house for putting trains before 'she who must be obeyed'!! great work there ...inspirational modelling at its best! Quote
BosKonay Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Working in the shed last night is really suffering for your art!! They are coming out fantastically! Quote
enniscorthyman Posted March 28, 2014 Author Posted March 28, 2014 (edited) Another update on the bubble- I am using a gray undercoat for the body and from what I can see a few extra coats will be required as you can see the wood grain. I made the pipe area from the parts left over from the prestwin and a little bit of brass wire. The break pipe is not from the prestwin kit but from my own stock on hand. Some more detail to be done and then some paint and decals. And with a bit of luck she might look like this bubble a bit. Edited March 28, 2014 by enniscorthyman Quote
Kirley Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Starting to look the part Eamonn, well done. Quote
enniscorthyman Posted March 29, 2014 Author Posted March 29, 2014 I just noticed a mistake that both ladders should be opposite each other on the tank.I will sort it out later. Quote

enniscorthyman Posted March 29, 2014 Author Posted March 29, 2014 too much guinness when on the production line Eamonn? No,bloody cold in the shed Sheamus, hard to think straight out there sometimes, and I cant wait for longer evenings:banana: Quote
enniscorthyman Posted April 5, 2014 Author Posted April 5, 2014 Just finished the bubble and I am happy with the result. I know the SSM brass detail would look better, but I just wanted to see how left over parts from the prestwin kit would look like when used with a bit of brass tube and wire. I did a small bit of weathering which helps any dodgy painting. Next on the workbench-IFM LC kit,and cement wagons to do and my ballast train upgrade plus SSM phone box kit. Quote
burnthebox Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 Fantastic workmanship there enniscorthyman, keep the pics coming, sent pm Quote
Kirley Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 Well done with the Cement Bubbles, and congratulations on a very innovative and unique approach to modelling them. Good to see you are not sitting on your laurels and have a good list of projects in the pipeline. It has to be an encouragement to Those Who View And Are Yet To Do! Quote
jhb171achill Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Great to see such a varied (and superbly made) selection of goods stock. Quote

enniscorthyman Posted April 7, 2014 Author Posted April 7, 2014 Thanks for comments Guys.I am was wondering what people thought of my cheap bubble and how a ordinary joe like me could make one that is up to scratch and would it pass off as acceptable. As regards what's next, time to get the finger out and get things done and also I want to finish the SSM Wickham inspection when I can source a 35 Black beetle. Quote
BosKonay Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Lovely! The wood gives the finished bubble a great non plastic texture! Quote
enniscorthyman Posted April 7, 2014 Author Posted April 7, 2014 Lovely! The wood gives the finished bubble a great non plastic texture! Indeed its does Stephen-I found it very easy to throw on some weathering powders and a bit of rust, and even though the bubble is hand painted,it was easy to cover up any mishaps as a rough unloved appearance. The grain of the wood helps that way as well. murrayec Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Hi enniscorthyman Well done on the bubbles, they look amazing in the outdoor shots- looks like they've been in service for years, i think its the wood that adds that character. I see you have a few more to do! Branchlines are the guys for Blackbeetle motors if you cant source it elsewhere murrayec Quote

I did order a BB from another UK supplier but ran into problems in that they quite simply would not send out my order- with no explanation. Quote
murrayec Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Hi I was just looking back over the thread and had a thought on the inspection car motor- a Thenshodo spud has a lower profile than the BB motor it may fit the purpose better and they are cheaper. I use them for the lower profile reason, I do not have to cut a hole in the floor for the motor to stick up thrugh for the BB, I just drill a hole thru for the screw on the Thenshu..... couldn't resist that!! Branchlines again for spuds murrayec Quote
enniscorthyman Posted May 29, 2014 Author Posted May 29, 2014 Workbench is back in action again after a bit of rest. Ballast wagons are on the production line again for new brass bearings, pipes, hand wheel, and some rust and the stone load has been dropped down a bit and some weight added to the base of the chassis. BosKonay Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 ABsolutely gorgeous looking! Are you using kadee no.5's? Quote
heirflick Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 well done eamonn - go get yourself a pint now...and well deserved it is! Quote
enniscorthyman Posted May 29, 2014 Author Posted May 29, 2014 ABsolutely gorgeous looking! Are you using kadee no.5's? Kadee no.20 more like it Bos. The 20s work well but I felt the wagons needed a bit more weight. The ballast plough vans are on the bench as well for work. Quote
driver301 Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Ballast wagons look fantastic! Well Done Eamonn Quote

enniscorthyman Posted June 7, 2014 Author Posted June 7, 2014 After a visit last October to see Noels Tara Junction and having been stunned by his layout and the variety of rolling stock, and his collection of Irish buses, I just loved the Bedford SS School bus in the long and short wheelbase. So I bought the long wheelbase version from Shapeways and now have her just finished.SSM decals along with some hand painting, plus a few passengers inside. As with 3d printing the finish is rough, but I did not bother with sanding. The front and rear windows have proven difficult to insert, and I used some clear fix to stick them in place, and I might re fix at a later stage. My mate who is good at wood turning, made up 11 more bubbles for me. I have 4 in the shed-1 made up and 3 painted and in need of chassis. I think when they are all done a rake of 15 will be nice,so now to save for 15 prestwin kits and some decals from Des. Quote
