Garfield
It's a regular occurrence. I remember travelling in a Mk2 years ago when suddenly there was a loud 'whack' on one of the windows, where someone had thrown a rock at it. It cracked the outer layer of the double-glazing but luckily it didn't shatter. The woman sitting beside it still got quite a fright, though... Broithe
There is a much more accurate technique for hitting the driver's window (which I don't want to reveal on a public forum) - the accuracy of that strike makes me wonder if that was the method they used. If it was, then it may become fashionable for a while.....
DiveController
Jeepers - Lucky the driver wasn't badly injured. Does that sort of serious criminal act happen often on the railways? Its borderline terrorism. Surprised it didn't make the news. If somebody was caught shining a laser torch at the cockpit of an airliner they could get 10 to 20 years. Garfield's right. It used to happen with even more alarming frequency, for instance in North Cork city on the approach to the Glanmire tunnel. At one point the anarchists tied a poor donkey to the line! Firing lasers at cockpits is more frequent than you might imagine also:facepalm:

CIE & the Gardaí did not seem to be too bothered about attacks on trains. While the Mk 2s & MK3 coaches were fairly safe passengers were sometimes injured by flying glass in older rolling stock. hurricanemk1c
Evening all, The last full Belmond tour ran last week, concluding on Monday morning with the 0800 Muine Bheag - Heuston. As I wasn't in college a lot that day due to the way an assignment was arranged, I was able to have a look at the shunt operation at Heuston. As always, click on any of the photos below to view them full size with details Having got home, had lunch and gone back out again to play badminton, I decided to kill an hour at Portarlington, with fruitful results. Due to a failure on the Sunday, 22043 was stabled in the Down Yard at Portarlington awaiting a driver to return to Laois Traincare Depot. This is the first time any passenger stock has gone into the yard since it was relaid into the current format Full album link - Regards, Kieran

thewanderer
RPSI: "The Western Explorer" Dublin - Athenry - Ennis - Limerick - Dublin Continuing the theme of celebrating 40 years of the magnificent and iconic 071 class diesel locomotives, this Dublin-based one-day excursion featured diesel haulage on a trip along the Western Rail Corridor. There were photostops at Monasterevan, Tullamore, Athlone, Attymon and Athenry, Ennis and Limerick. As usual a big thanks to the IE and RPSI staff who make these tours possible. All proceeds from today's tour will go towards restoring the RPSI Diesel fleet to mainline running. The next tour is scheduled for Saturday 8th April 2017 and the planned routing is: Connolly - Portarlington - Athlone - Galway - Kilkdare - Kilkenny - Kildare - Connolly. A tour very much in the mold of the iconic ITG tours which has high mileage and will probably have three different locomotives during the day. Photos from the tour yesterday are now online at http://smu.gs/2dLLxWt

hurricanemk1c
Evening all, A few photos from Booterstown Nature Reserve on Thursday. Having finished lectures at 1100 and did a bit extra, I left college at 1215 with the intention of going out for the IWT liner and DFDS/Timber services. However whilst walking down, I randomly decided to head south, in the hope of getting the driver training runs with the Cravens that have been operating this week. It was only when I got home that I realised it had been cancelled! Still, useful information for next time.
