Kirley Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 I've been struggling away building my first brass kit locomotive this past 2 months. With some outside help and advice I've got to this stage which leaves all the fiddly bits to finish. Quote
GSR 800 Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Looks great so far Kirley! The details can be tricky, but just take your time, and don't let them get to close to the soldering iron! Quote
Hunslet 102 Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Well done in getting this far Kirley, the long hard graft will be worth it Quote
Horsetan Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Just look at the power contained in that front end. He's really got it right. Quote
GSR 800 Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Just look at the power contained in that front end. He's really got it right. +1. He really captured the (often overlooked) elegant look if the SG class. Quote
Horsetan Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 .... elegant look of the SG class. I'd be calling it muscular rather than elegant. Quote
GSR 800 Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 (edited) I'd be calling it muscular rather than elegant. Maybe if your talking about the SG3 class! They were absolute powerhouses! Edited March 23, 2016 by GSR 800 Quote
The Derry Road Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 looking forward to seeing the finished model and the video. Looking fab so far TDR=D Quote
leslie10646 Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Good luck with the kit Kirley. My model of No.176 was built in Hong Kong by a guy who had never seen a seat loco (although he'd bit lots of kits!). That said, mine doesn't like 2 ft curves, so make the centre axle with lateral play if you can. You've reminded me to give it another go on the layout - I think it's languishing in a box! Kirley Posted March 25, 2016 Author Posted March 25, 2016 Got a bit further in the build, all the fiddly bits completed. Now for final clean up and wash before applying the first primer coat. Pickups and decoder to be fitted before testing the locomotive and tender. The beginning of the end is in sight. Quote
jhb171achill Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Looking good! (The primer shows what GNR locos would have looked like if the GSR or CIE had got their paint brushes near them!) Quote
Hunslet 102 Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Taking shape nicely Kieran, good job. Look forward to seeing it finished. Quote
popeye Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 That's very nice, love the footplate detail. Can i ask where do you get the etched primer and do you spray it on? Quote
Kirley Posted April 3, 2016 Author Posted April 3, 2016 Can i ask where do you get the etched primer and do you spray it on? I just use Halfords etched primer spray and leave it for a few days to allow it to fully dry. Quote
The Derry Road Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 lovely piece of work Kieran, well done TDR Quote
Kirley Posted April 8, 2016 Author Posted April 8, 2016 The build is almost finished but I am still running it on DC to sort out glitches before adding a decoder. Quote
Warbonnet Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 Smashing job Kieran. Be interested to see how you install the DCC decoder! Quote
Hunslet 102 Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 Lovely build Kieran, your steam fleet must be catching up with your diesel fleet! Quote
murrayec Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 Kirley That's cool it looks amazing I have this project in mind also, I have a Fouler F4 to do the same thing but cant bring myself with a knife to do it- the F4 is cool itself! Eoin Quote
Kirley Posted April 9, 2016 Author Posted April 9, 2016 Fran, the decoder is going in the Tender, a plasticard box already prepared for it. Quote
Warbonnet Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 Very nice! What way did you do the pick-ups? Quote
Kirley Posted April 9, 2016 Author Posted April 9, 2016 What way did you do the pick-ups? This is my first go and they are a bit uneven but work. Quote
Mike 84C Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 That looks very good Kieran, I hope my first attempt at an SSM kit is as good but I need to buy a Bandon tank loco first! Quote
GNRi1959 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 This is my first post on this forum and it does my heart good to see a beautiful loco like this, that passed through Omagh many times in its day. I have uploaded a picture of No. 40 arriving in Omagh. Its pure class, well done! Quote

I knew Omagh Station very well, living on the Tamlaght Road and spending a lot of time around Railway Terrace and the Dromore Road. Our playground included the closed but still intact Enniskillen line. I always admired your model of Omagh Station. Quote
GNRi1959 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 Thanks for your post, I'm living on the Tamlaght Road myself now and making plans on building my first layout in many years. Quote
