Hi everyone,

IRM was delighted to team up with our friends at IWT to sponsor the delivery of three truckloads of previously purchased track panels from Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail's permanent way depot in Portlaoise to the Maam Cross Connemara Railway Project.

The Maam Cross project now has enough track to complete phase one of their goal of relaying a stretch of the Connemara Railway but are in urgent need of funds to continue this excellent railway preservation project. If you can help out in any way financially or with volunteer time, please check out www.connemararailway.ie

Cheers!

Fran

On behalf of the volunteers a big thank you to the lads at IRM and IWT for their generous donation,

It will be great to get working on installing the standard gauge track in the near future 👍👍

Some more recent progress at Maam cross station,

The construction of the new signal cabin at the Galway end of the station continues at pace,it is located on the original site of the cabin.
A lever frame has been acquired and will be installed in the building over the coming weeks.
A semaphore signal was refurbished and will be placed near the cabin and will act as the platform starting signal.

More progress yesterday with the temporary narrow gauge tracks being laid towards the Galway city direction,

Exciting times ahead when after the open day (TBC) the standard 5' 3'' track will replace the temporary narrow gauge and will permit the use of former MGWR and CIE rolling stock to be used  at this scenic location.

There is a go fund me page in the link if you would wish to donate to this worthy cause.

Why are they first laying narrow gauge railway and then turning it into a standard gauge railway. Why?

The narrow gauge track was initially laid to promote and highlight the presence of the former railway to the passing public and was always intended as that,

The plan is to use standard gauge track and trains and have it open to the public in the not too distant future,

Standard gauge track has already being laid at the site and this work is ongoing, check out the link below….

Donations are welcome

So much being done by so few, if I’m not mistaken.

As is the case at most Heritage Railways in the whole of Europe, I would love to see in the long term some replica rolling stock, but yes it all costs money to do.☹️

Work continues at Maam cross station

A group of us started work today on fitting the levers to the frame in the new signal cabin and ensuring they were bolted into position, and were in line with the interlocking slots

A new access road is also being constructed behind signal cabin,

Standard gauge track panels were moved into position alongside the existing narrow gauge track which in the coming months will be removed and replaced with 5’3’’ gauge

A few photos from todays operation.
The first and last photos show the before and after of the levers slotted into the frame.

A major milestone was reached this morning when the first standard gauge rolling stock was rolled onto the rails at Maam cross-the first 5’3’’ gauge stock on the line since 1935.
The ballast hopper and plough van will quickly be followed by some two axle oil wagons, and some passenger coaches in the coming weeks.

Another two ballast hoppers arrived overnight to Maam cross, this completes the ballast train,

Even better to see the prototype wagon for the IRM model being saved-24256-it will be well looked after😜

Its miniature version is hard at work on Tara junction……

Stores oil former IE tank wagons 607A and 633A have now arrived in their  new home at Maam cross,

I have fond memories working with these  wagons when they were part of the nightly liner trains to and from Ballina/Claremorris.
Well done to all concerned

Beautiful models - the figure on the tank looks almost real.
