Ahhhhh so that’s where the blue thunder tour ended up….

Seriously???

That'd be something else.

Might finally see a black and orange 071 / 111...

Only catching up on this thread, now.

One word sums everything up:

Wow!

Fair play to everybody involved, what you are doing is just incredible.

I’m in the same boat as DJ…seriously? I know NIR have basically no use for em but a 111 would be the first of its kind to be preserved…and a big undertaking in itself

Or is 112 the number ye guys will have to dial when photographers from all over Ireland descend on maam cross on opening day 😆

Great to see the tankers living on. Nice spot if, for some reason, a certain manufacturer ever decided they needed to take a few photos, measurements etc for let's say, research purposes. Just saying...:D

Any ID for the carriage and where did it appear out of?

GSWR 837 of 1902, sister of the DCDR's restored 836. Previously prvately purchased by a now-deceased RPSI member and, i understand, given to the RPSI in his will.

The other coach in there, 813 (GSWR 1910), had been privately owned too by a group of about half a dozen RPSI members (it was never actually owned by the RPSI), but as these folks were the regular Mullingar work squad 30/40 years ago, 813 ended up based in Mullingar shed as a tarry / restroom for volunteer workers there. The group of owners recently agreed to let the vehicle go to Maam Cross on condition that it be kept under cover and looked after. It appears to be inside the shed there now.

GSWR 813 was a Corridor Third class  it was extensively modified internally to convert it into a Holiday Camping Coach following its withdrawal it was purchased by a syndicate of Mullingar working members in the early 1970’s to  be used a dormitory/ canteen coach .
Great to see it at Maam Cross .

That's correct, the hotel is being used exclusively to host Ukranians. Very nice people btw. The bar is open during the day to cater for the bus tourists.

They have a food truck and bar outside the hotel which seems very popular. Maam is really the crossroads of Connemara. If the railway offering is correct, it will do very very well.

I think it’s shut, actually, to house Ukrainians, though that means nowhere to stay within a billion miles of Maam cross……

Just learn a few phrases - I'm sure you would get away with it.

It looks easy enough:-

Повторіть, будь ласка. Будь ласка, говоріть повільно.

Probably easier than Kerry...

Интересно, можно ли было набрать несколько украинских добровольце

I doubt very much, the majority of refugees from Ukraine are women, and men are only those who either have a disability / serious illness, or more than 3 children

813 is shown in the Herbie Richards/Brendan Pender GSWR Carriage Diagrams book as a 3rd alright but centre corridor?

  • 1 month later...

More activity from Maam cross took place yesterday in between the thunderstorms….

Well wagon 649A arrived from Waterford and was put on the rails,

Some building rubble was removed from around the signal cabin,

Preparation of the ground along the goods loading and cattle bank siding was completed-this allowed the installation of a buffer stop and 5’3” track panel.
Enjoy the photos….
