Near Bray G2 661 with an ancient and modern-ish passenger set . 18 Sept 1954.

The 'modern' coaches appear to be former Drumm Battery Train C or D which were converted to hauled stock in 1953/4 after the removal of the batteries and electrical equipment.

Nice to see someone in the first coach with their head out enjoying the show! Signals either show another train expected on the other line, or more likely, that Adavoyle box is switched out.

The Navan negative may be shaky, but it’s the only image I’ve found so far of Navan Junction’s yard! Cool!

Looking at the first photo of No 500, the fifth vehicle appears to be some kind of van followed by another set of coaches. Each carriage set also seem  to be arranged in a descending order of 'modernity'.  I think therefore the train is composed of a couple or more portions for different destinations.

500s train is likely be a Dublin-Cork mail train with through portions to Limerick (via Ballybrophy), Clonmel (via Thurles), Tralee (via Mallow) and Cork.

CIE also operated a combined Kingsbridge-Limerick-Thurles train with a Clonmel coach which divided at Ballybrophy. Sometimes the train loco continued to Limerick while the Thurles-Clonmel branch loco (usually a large Coey 4-4-0) worked the Ballybrophy-Thurles-Clonmel portion of the train often an ex-GSWR 12-wheel "Rosslare" Brake composite. (Decade of Steam Donaldson, O'Neill and Mc'Donald 1RRS 1972.

The coaches in the train appear to be relatively modern by the standards of CIE steam hauled stock during the early 1950s, the new 1951-53 stock were mainly used as trailer vehicles with the AEC railcars or used to strengthen late GSWR/GSR stock on mail line passenger trains. The Bogie Van coupled to the loco appears to be a 1920s woodenbodied GSWR/GSR vehicle, CIE did not get round to building "modern" bogie vans until 1959.

Yes, Ernie, you did well getting this collection. It was obviously taken by one of the LCGB party led by Lance King in June 1957, for HIS shots are of the same trains.

His shot of "Armagh" is in the BACKGROUND of a shot of SLNCR Railbus 2A - he missed a fine opportunity to catch No.203. Instead the IRRS collection has two shots at the shed with BLACK engines!

Thanks for sharing them!

Glass negative G2 655 at Broadstone Dublin. Date sometime between 1926 and 1934 when rebuilt with a Belpaire SH Boiler & firebox. Flyaway Cab removed 1935 according to Locomotives of the GSR.

MGW 1930- ca G2 655 Broadstone Dublin date photo 1926-1934 when rebeuilt with a Belpaire SH type Y boiler.

Shows up the dark grey livery well; you can make out the dark red of the buffer beam, which always appeared darker grey in a black'n'white photo.

Whatever became of those "pointer light" subsidiary signals? York Road seems to have been the only place they were ever installed....

IIRC Larne Line resignalling c1984 killed all that off. The old searchlights and somersaults all went along with the signal cabins.

Only a few years until the  WTs finally vanished in 1970-71 (last locos were steamed in 1970 but a handful of the class remained hanging about until mid 71 before scrapping). Lough Erne was technically an NIR loco at time of withdrawal but was never branded with the ‘stapler’ logo.
