Dave Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Very clever, the simplest ideas are always the best! Quote
richrua Posted August 29, 2014 Author Posted August 29, 2014 I found these amongst my old things. Unbuilt kits complete with Marks Models prices from years ago... those are Punts prices! Building the superquick now. I love the way i never threw anything out! Quote
richrua Posted October 1, 2014 Author Posted October 1, 2014 I have been working on a small branch line type station. I found this polystyrene roll useful as underlay. On one side it has a durable paper which accepts paint and glue happily. At £10 for 5m2 it is cheap too. Next will be dropper wiring and ballast . Also some buildings of course Quote
richrua Posted October 2, 2014 Author Posted October 2, 2014 I was looking for an Irish signal cabin. Thought I had one but it didnt work out. Mammy always said neccessity is the mother of invention, so i made a start on making my own. One of the things I like about the GNR I is the unique buildings. I came across an old photo on google of knockmore signal cabin. A unique building in many ways - no big window on this one. Quote
Riversuir226 Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Excellent work so far interesting cabin to build and its always great to see a bit of scratchbuilding. Looking forward to seeing this build progress. Quote
scahalane Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Excellent start I'm looking forward to seeing how it progresses. Quote
richrua Posted October 11, 2014 Author Posted October 11, 2014 bit of work on the dcc conversion. Quote
richrua Posted October 11, 2014 Author Posted October 11, 2014 i give up. the first pic is the right way up here. when i post it flipped. so i rotated it here and posted again and now it is mirror image .... Quote
richrua Posted October 11, 2014 Author Posted October 11, 2014 a few pics of the elink system . upside down. Quote
Noel Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 a few pics of the elink system . upside down. There you go right way up Quote
richrua Posted October 17, 2014 Author Posted October 17, 2014 I am going to convert my Silver Fox A class to dcc using this as the chassis. As recommended by enniscorthy man. The lima chassis motor i got was so poor compared to modern machines. what a difference 30 years makes! Almost seems a shame to chop this one. it is in good nick for a second hander. Quote
richrua Posted October 17, 2014 Author Posted October 17, 2014 i wonder would the St Paddy body be worth anything? these are the railroad range but dcc ready. actually pretty good for 40 quid. perfect for AClass . thanks to enniscorthy man fir the advice Quote
richrua Posted October 19, 2014 Author Posted October 19, 2014 delighted with the respray. was worth the effort. Quote
popeye Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Lookin good, love the cabin & the paint job on the A Class. I will look forward to more pic's. Quote
Kirley Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 You may wish to consider using two motor bogies for your A Class. The difference in traction is immense. Tidy paint job on the A and some intricate work on the Cabin. Lots of people buy St Paddy for the chassis, I must have loads of bodies, if there is a market for them please let me know. Quote
Noel Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 ... Lots of people buy St Paddy for the chassis ... Hi Kirley, forgive my ignorance but what is 'St Paddy' for chassis, do you mean an MM 071 Co-Co chassis? Can you buy MM chassis on their own or are there similar all wheel dual bogie drive bachmann chassis that suit. I enquired about an RTR Silver fox A class but they don't sell with dual bogie drive option. Thanks. Noel Quote
Kirley Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 what is 'St Paddy' for chassis, I think the Hornby Class 55 model you bought has the name plate "St Paddy". I was suggesting using two Class 55 motor bogies. On my Work Bench Page 39 you can see the results of a lot of trials and tribulations I had in getting it right. Quote
richrua Posted October 21, 2014 Author Posted October 21, 2014 Hi Noel, St Paddy is a Hornby Railroad loco number R2879. The guys here recommended it to me for my A Class (after I had discovered a Lima Class 55 chassis was a very por runner by modern standards). As Kirley says, it can be converted fairly easlily to suit the a class kit from silver fox models. Just Chop a section out of the middle and a little trim. The St Paddy chassis also comes with an 8 pin dcc socket, which makes things easy if you want digital control. Quote
richrua Posted October 21, 2014 Author Posted October 21, 2014 Hi Kirley - that is interesting about the double motor bogies. I might give it a go! Quote
Horsetan Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Doing a double-motor bogie used to be the cheap way of getting a British outline diesel to actually do some work - I tried it in a Hornby "Hymek", and have parts to do a double-motored ex-Lima Class 40. The idea does work quite well. Quote

It is worth sticking the bodies on eBay, starting at £5.00 or thereabouts, and see what happens. I fund my railway by selling 'junk', so there should be no problem in selling your Hornby Deltic bodies. Quote
heirflick Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 I've just bought junk????? its the beginning of the end for you!! Quote
Dhu Varren Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 I've just bought junk????? Ah, but that was good junk!. Quote
burnthebox Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 I've just bought junk????? There's at least three of them on there now, & no mention of " Junk " so get in before the rush Quote
