Just caught up with Dugort Harbour, stellar modelling and wonderful stories along the way.

Have you come to a decision about your backscene? If not, can I point you toward Chaz H's "Athena" on NGRM Online (his other layout, the Furness Valley RR is also worth a look)? US-outline narrow gauge but well worth a look. His backscene technique might be just what you need: it starts here but the whole thread is great.

All the best,

Mark

Very many thanks, Mark! I’ll check that out.

I can’t claim credit for the scenery, though I intend to do the next lot largely myself. It was done by Kevin McIntosh and captures perfectly the sort of remote and neglected type of outpost of the railway I’m trying to portray.

Is that Kevin from South Africa, used to work for Model Railway Baseboards?
Saw some of his stuff in Bray some months back, fantastic modeller, Narrow gauge Bayer Garrett, stunning

The scenery is excellently done and certainly has captured the look of a bleak and slightly run-down railway outpost.

Update - just looked at that technique - very good indeed.

Hope you find it useful! Its a technique I'm planning to employ at some point as I've still got several projects germinating!

Cheers,

Mark

3rd November 1975, and the very last train pulls out of Dugort Harbour, watched by rain-wearied Kerry sheep.

The line has been goods-only since 1967, and will now slumber for forty-seven years before Eamon Ryan reopens it as a cycleway for Lycra-clad people only (except Enda).

A23R takes the last few empty wagons away.

Ten years apart.

In June 1951, J15 No. 109 shunts at Dugort Harbour.

In June 1961, A55 arrives with the afternoon passenger train. The rostered “C” class broke down.

And in June 1971, A23R - straight out of Inchicore after receiving its new engine - is in charge of an IRRS special train, as regular passenger trains ceased in 1967.

On the same day, a shabby looking B141 has the daily goods, shown here shunting, then departing for Castletown West.

“OK……Did ye hear all that stuff ‘bout Vietnam on the wireless? I reckon it’ll be another world war, what with them commies an’all….”

I hope the linen won’t get steam & smoke damage with those 800 class queens roaring past!

There’s a guy sent down in a Commer van to sort it all out. Fifteen shillings it cost.

One more for the time being; from an old print found in a drawer….

A goods transfer from “town” sidles into Dugort Harbour in 1946….

(Without a visible “flying snail” it would be 1929!)

The goods van is off for weathering next week.

Another superb photo, Jonathan, please keep 'em coming!

A few more….

This old GNR van has been sitting at the buffers here for six months….

Fair day beckons, and five cattle trucks have been ordered in. Tomorrow the place will be full of cattle lorries after the mixed has gone.

Gorgeous modelling: the overgrown track, the down-at-heel rolling stock, the air of decay. Simply stunning!

On 29th April 1965, the midday passenger departs for Castletown West, with 7 passengers on board, and six cardboard boxes of linen goods in the van.

Some very realistic, atmospheric shots there full of realism, well done JB.

Thanks, Tony. There’s been nothing much else happening in recent times as I’ve been busy elsewhere but I’m hoping for further progress soon.

Got sick of seeing this little DWWR beauty unpainted, so out came the brushes tonight! So here’s its last time sans paint and grubby weathering….

Looking forward to seeing the results, Jonathan: you've beaten me to it as I've run out of my chosen shade of grey! Plus I haven't got any wheels yet.....

Cheers,

Mark

The wheels for mine were ordered ages ago, and are in a packet in Wales awaiting my next visit!
