  1. That’s very interesting Gleeson and O ‘Dea were a firm of ironmongers in Dublin , I think there was a connection to Jim O’Dea railway photographer
  2. Did a similar fate not befall CIE (B201) 224 , following its transfer to NIR in 1985/86 was found to have a bent frame and was replaced by 218 , its was laying out of use for many years before being scrapped .
  3. Surely you mean ‘the plough and the stars ‘ van in that case
  4. I think DiveController is on the money with regard to the fitting of CAWS in the mid 1980’s as this would coincide with this modification, I think the large and small windows have been followed by Paddy Murphy in his 121 models
  5. No this was an earlier mod carried out to all the 121's except 125 . the rear cab windows being covered over came much later and was only carried out to a few locos .
  6. Looks very good at this stage for a comparison here is a great shot of brian Flannigans from Flickr
  7. I think all of the 121 class had the modified smaller window except 125 .
  8. For the irish rail Mk2a,b,c 4101,4102,4108,4110 Hornby or Bachmann Mk2A SO's or Murphy models Mk2A's 4401 4402 4109 Lima Mk2 B Fk 4113 4114 Bachmann Mk2a Fk 4103 4104 4105 4106 4107 were Mk2c FO's nothing commercially available yet . 4601, 4602,4603 Dutch EGV , Dc kits or Irish freight models . Here's a link to one I converted earlier
  9. Here’s a Lima Mk2f picked this up on eBay for less than €20 , a bit dated and a few mm shorter than other manufacturers but not the end of the world, add some Shaw plan flush glaze and add handrails and you have got a good Mk2f
  10. Any Mk2f is a pretty good match although the CIE ones were classed as Mk2D they are nearer to the BR Mk2F , Lima did a Mk2F 1st and 2nd a little dated but with a little work they are not too bad . Bachmann have recently introduced a Mk2f excellent models but pricey , Hornby have recently introduced a MK2F 1st and 2nd they are really nice coaches and reasonable priced , I managed to pick one up for £31.50 Stg with a view to repainting it in Supertrain colours .
  11. I was reading George Dent's ' Airbrushing for railway modellers ' he suggests washing the model with a soda crystal solution prior to painting .
  12. I have finally got around to fitting the mousa sides to a Lima Mk1 , the drawback with the brass overlay is the lack of relief detail so I have added door hinges , door handles and very nice shawplan Mk1 window frames . I also fitted B5 bogies , extended buffers and gangways .
  13. Also the larger centre window and the snatcher on the 121 is sitting at an angle to the body side which can be clearly seen in this picture on 129 , on the other locos A , 141 , 181 and B201s the snatcher would sit flush to the body side
  14. Interesting for the collector is one way of putting it , I wonder will they be like some rare postage stamp with a flaw in them and worth thousands some day ? Here’s one of mine .
  15. That is what would make the C/B201 a good proposition multiple liveries including NIR , three versions , Crossley engine version , Maybach and GM645 .
  16. Along with the family silver the house and any shares , never mind bitcoin or gold just but irish diesel locomotives !
  17. Certainly a must for ant Irish layout .
  18. Don't mention the phrase 'shade of green ' on this site you will open a can of worms , you have been warned . I'm grabbing me helmet and heading for my nissen hut in me garden .
  19. Studio scale models http://www.studio-scale-models.com/ do brass overlay's for the Mk2 EGV and Mk3 push pull . If you want to bring the Hornby and Airfix Mk2's into the 21st century Shawplan http://www.shawplan.com/extreme_coachandunit_Laserglaze_4mm.html do very nice laserglaze units for them .
  20. The one thing I do remember in particular about the 121 class in regard to sound was when they pulled in at a station was a distinctive knocking noise from the loco , this was the air compressor rebuilding the air pressure this was louder than on the other B Gm’s possibly as they may have had a different on board air compressor on the 121 class , don’t know if this can be recreated on a sound chip .
  21. i would think this would be the best policy trying to find out which engine is in which is difficult at this stage or just leave the 121/141 with 567 sound chips and 181's with 645 .
  22. I believe ( I could be wrong ) but sometime during the 1990's that some of the remaining 567 block's were converted to 645 , the difference between the two is the cylinder size 567 cylinder bore 8 1⁄2 in (216 mm)/ 645 9 1⁄16 in (230 mm ) this was possibly more for convenience than performance as you only had to keep one set of spares , so chances are that a 121 of 141 in the mid to late 90's all had 645 by default , what difference this made to the sound is beyond my pay grade !!
  23. Is Supertrain orange introduced in 1972/73 RAL 2010 ? Irish Rail Intercity later orange RAL2011?
  24. here is another clip on the beet , I think the 121 and 141 classes were better performers in conditions like this on the beet .
  25. it would want to have gold ones at that price
