Cheers, @leslie10646! A year down in deepest Westmeath and a wedding in nine weeks' time - a year full of lockdowns has flown by! As always, the wheels are turning on some exciting new projects, and of course we now have the A Class in production, so lots to look forward to in 2021!

Yes, shouldn't be an issue!

Not sure where that rumour originated from, but it's false. Wheel sets are made from turned metal, not casting, and the wheels, axle, and insulators are all separate components. The wheels can be moved outwards by using a wheel pullers such as this one: https://www.fohrmann.com/en/model-railway-wheel-puller-h0.html

Maybe their website just removes items that are out of stock? Such products are generally produced in batches so it may just be a case of waiting until Silver Fox produce their next batch...

Having seen this layout at the Great Electric Train Show last year, I can confirm it is indeed stunning in the flesh!

Milk how was it transported around Ireland in the 1940's to 1960's?
Garfield replied to Colin R's topic in General Chat
I remember boxes of chicks being regularly unloaded from Mk2 generator vans in Longford up until the early '00s. -
Yep, we have photographic proof. This wagon was moved to the gypsum pool after dolomite traffic ceased in the 1980s.

Yes, but was originally preserved with the 'Plug & Socket' logos...

That's very odd. You emailed at 1.02pm on November 12th, and I responded to you at 1.10pm. Then you emailed later that night at 9.42pm, and I responded to you at 9.47pm. We receive a lot of emails every day and have had no other reports of problems, so I wonder if there might be a technical issue with your email account?
-
Hi BTB, Just to clarify, you emailed us twice on November 12th and I responded to both emails. By the tone of the second message, it appeared you had not received the first one, so maybe our responses were directed to your spam folder? Also... the ballasts and gypsums are beings shipped directly to Dublin.

Weathering Murphy Models 121 Class Locomotives With Mick Bonwick
Garfield replied to Warbonnet's topic in Tips & Tricks
They could get grubby when they were out and about for a while... -
It's currently stored in a top secret location.

Hi Controller, The decoder on sale is for the locos as re-engined with the General Motors power unit. To record a Crossley engine of the type originally used in the locos (and the one required for A1) we need access to a preserved X Class engine in Australia as there are no other operational locomotives with this engine type, but plans to do this have been affected firstly by wild fires in the region at the turn of the year and more recently by COVID-19 restrictions. We'll get it done as soon as possible!

Only a matter of time now until the layout is populated with CIÉ locos and is renamed 'Charlestown into the 80's', @Si2020...

Murphy's CIE Mk IId coaches - What's What
Garfield replied to FrankS's question in Questions & Answers
I wouldn't say the A Class were "ancient" in 1972 - they were only 17 years old and in terms of technology were on a par with the GMs of the time, which were only 6-11 years younger (depending on class), and in their 12-645E engines they had a newer block design than the 121s and 141s. By comparison, the 201 Class were already 12 years old by the time the CAF Mk4s were introduced... -
Fleischmann HO Profi Track production ended
Garfield replied to connollystn's topic in Continental European Modelling
Both Roco and Fleischmann are now owned by Modelleisenbahn GmbH. A few years ago they took the decision to have each brand focus on a specific scale, so Roco is now the brand catering for HO scale products while Fleischmann is exclusively N scale. It's possible the Profi track may reappear as a Roco product. -
Glad you like the sounds! Still have that Napier drone ringing in our ears after the recording session. The Rails/NRM and Rails/DPS special editions are available exclusively from those outlets.

Parts for Model Railway engines and coaches HO/OO
Garfield replied to Thomas's topic in General Chat
It's an issue for all manufacturers, not just smaller ones, if it's a product that hasn't been produced for some time; it's normally only viable to produce extra spares while the main item is being manufactured. -
mgwr preserved railway Connemara Railway project.
Garfield replied to ttc0169's topic in What's happening on the network?
It's 5ft, same as Russia. Not as wide as ours but still wider than 'standard'... -

Finland, too... -
Nice find, @LM186! Definitely looks like a 30-footer.

The forum software had to be upgraded to keep abreast of security requirements and other unseen elements, but the developers also tweaked the design as part of the upgrade so it automatically implemented that change, too. Nothing can be done about it. I appreciate some users don't like change, but as with previous changes no one's going to care too much about it in another couple of weeks when everyone has become familiar with the new layout.

Nail on the head. The A Class exhaust system is pretty basic in that there's essentially three holes in the roof for the three exhaust manifolds to release gases and fumes through - nothing more complicated than that! It certainly did give them a distinctive sound in comparison to other EMD-engined locomotives. We will have an update in the next few weeks that include a sound demo, which we're excited for everyone else to hear...

Needs must. They were offered good money and they needed funds to go towards their other restoration projects. NIR had removed the engines and other equipment before handing them over so it would have been very unlikely they could have been restored to running condition in preservation. Anyway, one of them is still in Wales so you never know, it might find its way back...
