The RPSI are delighted to announce the arrival of a limited edition run of our Cravens coaches in model form. Produced in 1/76 scale, the limited edition pack feature open coaches 1505 and 1532 along with snack car 1508. The models will only be available as a complete set in their own specially commissioned box. All funds raised from the sale of these coaches will go towards the purchase of a water bowser truck for our steam operations with any remaining funds going to support the restoration of our 121 class locomotive 134.

This production run is limited to 250 units and are sure to be popular with modellers/collectors and supporters of the RPSI. It would be the intention that should these models sell out there will be a subsequent production run of three further open coaches. This will allow people to create and authentic length train of RPSI Cravens coaches. The cost for the limited edition pack will be €159.99. It would be the intention that these models will be available for purchase on the upcoming Munster Double railtour on the 14th of October.

Details and availability of the models for general ordering and sale will be confirmed shortly.

The RPSI would like to acknowledge the great assistance from Paddy Murphy of Murphy Models in the creation of these models and thank him for his ongoing support of the RPSI.

Wonderful news and a great idea about MM RPSI cravens. That's Christmas sorted by a rake. They look superb. I'd been wondering about doing some resprays but the thin black lining between the blue and cream seemed beyond my ability. Looking forward to these and it's only two and a half weeks before they are available. Congrats to all involved. Didn't see this coming.

Going to be a fantastic set and at only 250 units I can see them selling out. One thing I hope is that a second set is commissioned unlike the RPSI Mk2 set. There are still a few of these around and a second set was promised to be commissioned if they sold out which they more or less have a few years now. Granted more of the RPSI Mk2s would required some modifications.

Anyway, back to these Cravens, love the livery and will be picking up a few sets when released, it would be nice if they make the October show.

Now, if someone were to release a high end RTR GSV in maroon and past liveries....

Something tells me there won't be any 121s to buy this year, just can't see it happening. There are other MM items that were due since early this year too that have not made an appearance. Re release of the ST Mk2s, the 201s in the interm and new Enterprise liveries, Cravens 1509 running number.

I understand Marks Models may have the RPSI/MM Craven sets in stock in a few weeks.

Well at the rate things have been happening in the last 48hours, nothing would surprise me in relation to timing of the 121. :) Can't see a big demand for more MM 201s when so many are still on shelves, same with ST Mk2s, but the MM 121s should fly off the shelves.

Fantastic looking models and I'm really looking forward to them. Pity that the second set is proposed to consist of three open standards instead of two standards and bar car 1514. To my mind this would produce a more representative train.

I agree 100% that including 1514 would really make this a wonderful set if the second run is to be produced. I haven't traveled on the RPSI set since they acquired them from IE so I haven't seen the interior of 1514 some pics ( in a dedicated thread as not to derail this one ) would be appreciated to see if one of the standards could be converted. Would folks be happy enough if they just blanked out windows 4 and 5 on a standard and numbered it 1514. Anyway I will definitely support this as the RPSI is a great society and they deserve all the support they get.

Agree a 1514 would be nice. Wiggy over on RMweb posted a nice video of his beautifully resprayed RPSI set which included 1514 Bar car with the window panels covered over. Certainly wets the appetite for the Murphy Models RPSI craven set due to ship in only two weeks time.

1508 was done. Very similar to what would be required for a good 1514 mod.

It should be a fairly simple and quick DIY modification from an exterior point of view. Two very thin pieces of plasticard hand painted the same cream colour glued over the centre windows like the plating over on 1514. The interior would need a little more work but just a few pieces of plasticard in place of a few rows of seats. I guess it would not be economic for MM to tool for such a tiny volume of a new specialist coach. Does anybody know if the RPSI 3 coach sets are factory repaints of existing MM B&T stock or new factory production models? I had assumed the latter.

I'm not a fan of commenting on another manufacturers products but I highly doubt that these are factory repaints of existing stock.

The RPSI commissioned these models using existing MM moulds, not repainting MM stock

Thanks Dave

Would it be a better idea to convert a MM Craven rather than mess with the new RPSI ones? Would save a few bob anyway

Would it not be easier to stick two plasticard panels over the windows of an RPSI coach rather than respray an entire MM B&T, match the colours precisely, and do that thin black lining well enough to match the superb looking RPSI samples? For DIY the black lining seems beyond masking and probably needs the dark and rare art of a lining pen. :)

Its hardly a dark art making changes to a model. Some people are completely terrified at the prospect of it and like to tell others this also. Its not the dark art you say it is

Well said Blaine. That's put those of us who don't feel confident in messing about with a fairly expensive model in our place!

Modelmaster decals have a range of coach lining in different colours including black in different thicknesses. No black art involved in using these just patience. In fairness to what Ed was saying, if you don't try and sometimes fail like we all have you won't improve. The more you practice the more your technique will improve.

Hi Rich.

Thanks for the heads up re modelmaster. Is this the type product you refer to? https://modelmaster.uk/4mm-locomotive-lining-packs/17713-mm4000b-black-lining-05mm-wide.html If its a waterslide transfer and only 0.5mm thick, I don't see how one can possibly get it absolutely 100% dead straight, especially over a paint surface join between the white and blue paint. BTW, when I used the term 'dark art', I was of course referring to the use of a lining pen nib with wet paint, which from looking at many YouTubes seems a very specialised skill.

Check out lining:

(it should start 2h21m16s in to the very long video)

Cheers

Noel

PS: The guys in this training video are brilliant but its 3hrs long so recommend only watching the segments of interest.
