Kirley Posted August 28, 2013 Author Posted August 28, 2013 I would not have any expertise on CIE workings but the inspiration for this build was from a picture of one in the book 'Rails Through The West' I had an old Airfix low loader but had lost the JCB so I picked up a Dapol one. Have a look at an earlier thread started by Heirflick -http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/showthread.php/727-low-loader?highlight=loader. Yes same as Dave's ones - he's got 'such great hands'. Quote
Kirley Posted August 28, 2013 Author Posted August 28, 2013 That's the one. Ingenuity was the mother of invention. Quote
Kirley Posted August 30, 2013 Author Posted August 30, 2013 Wagons have had their pipework etc. added, sprayed and now waiting for decals before final assembly. I must mention a big Thank You to Hidden Agenda for his Tutorial on this build. Quote
Kirley Posted October 1, 2013 Author Posted October 1, 2013 (edited) I’m slowly building up my stock of Curtain Side Cement Wagons. Edited October 1, 2013 by Kirley Quote
33lima Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 Great work there. Love the hoppers especially! Quote
Kirley Posted November 8, 2013 Author Posted November 8, 2013 Got this Ratio Crane Kit for my Container Yard. It's reasonably straight forward to build except for the ladder hoops and the railings - always a nightmare for me. Got its initial primer coat before final assembly. There is an extra Ratio kit which provide wheels to the Crane. A bit steep at £5 for what it is. Quote
Kirley Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 Concentration on the Oil Depot and Fuelling Point which involved a lot of kit building all from Knightwing Kits. Made up my own Fuelling Depot with a corporate colour that looked right to me but not I'm sure representing anything on Irish Rail. Oil Tanks and Portacabin constructed and painted. Curved wall made out of plywood and covered in DAS Clay and then Wills Stone sheet pressed into it to give a stone wall impression. Inside of the wall ready of the DAS Clay treatment. Container Crane finally completed. Walls and internal walls. Internal walls glued in place and coping top on all the walls finished the wall building. Sorry about the picture quality but the light was fading badly at this stage. Quote
irishthump Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Lovely work there, Kirley. What make is the container crane, and is it a kit? Quote
Riversuir226 Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Lovely work Kieran can t wait to see them planted on the layout. The wagons are class. Quote
Riversuir226 Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 York rd has a similar refueling point Quote
Kirley Posted December 19, 2013 Author Posted December 19, 2013 Working of some Cement Bubbles and a Parcel Van. I was lucky to get the last of a run of Cement Bubbles, the resin body was supplied but you had to provide the chassis so I used the Dapol C043 kits. I got 10 but now I wish I got more but they are all gone now. I had asked Allen Doherty (Worsley Works) to do me coach sides for a NIR Parcel Van and he eventually got round to it. These van were converted from MPD Units and I think each one was different. This is it the priming stage, filling to do. Quote
heirflick Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 looking forward to seeing that baby finished! Quote
Dunluce Castle Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Superb job. How did you attach the brass sides onto the donor coach? Glue? Quote
UP6936 Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Those cement bubbles are really nice. Cant wait to see them decaled up. Are you going to weather them? Quote
Kirley Posted December 22, 2013 Author Posted December 22, 2013 How did you attach the brass sides onto the donor coach? Glue? I used Evostick Timebond and as many clamps as I could fit on. The difficult area is between the doors and the roof as the amount of doner coach is so thin it's hard to get a good bond. Quote
Kirley Posted December 26, 2013 Author Posted December 26, 2013 Glazing and spraying completed. Now waiting on decals before a little bit of light weathering. Quote
jhb171achill Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 A superb and very unusual model! I remember those things rattling about tagged onto the ends if railcars. One minor point - I would file the roof vents off. Quote
jhb171achill Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Actually, I could be wrong but I think the gangways were taken off these as well... Quote
Kirley Posted December 26, 2013 Author Posted December 26, 2013 A superb and very unusual model! I remember those things rattling about tagged onto the ends if railcars. One minor point - I would file the roof vents off. Confused! Quote
Hunslet 102 Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Nice work Kieran, the colouring looks spot on.The roof vents on the MEDs and subsequently the converted parcel vans were the flat type,I have a feeling that is what JHB is meaning.Personally,I think the vents look fine on your model,I intend to get a set of the Worsley Works etches myself soon and would use the same donor coach as you did and thus I would not alter the roof vents either. The corridor connectors on the parcel vans were removed by NIR and plated over, your model would look closer to the original if you omitted the connectors. Kirley Posted January 3, 2014 Author Posted January 3, 2014 I had a go at making some Artic Cabs, an AEC Mercury and a ERF E Series supplied by Road Transport Images. As I know nothing about lorries it's been a bit of a learning curve. Quote
jhb171achill Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Indeed, Hunslet! Apologies for the confusion, it's the way I put it. As you know, there were variations among them - in fact, it's possible no two were identical! I have a picture which my father took of one, but it didn't come out very well. I looked it up yesterday but the pic is so dark it doesn't throw any light on the matter..... (see what I did?) I do have an idea that at least one might have few or no vents. In any event, a very unique and interesting model. Quote
Kirley Posted January 6, 2014 Author Posted January 6, 2014 Gangways now "plated up". Steve at Railtec was very helpful in guiding me through the design of the decals. Another project finally completed. Quote
jhb171achill Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Kirkby, what a set of pictures! Stunning stuff, absolutely stunning! Quote
Warbonnet Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Top work Kieran, some fantastic skills put into that parcel van and some learned along the way I bet! Quote
Dave Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Lovely work there Kieran, looks the business:tumbsup: Quote
BosKonay Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Wow, wow wow, that entire scene is just gorgeous! Quote
