BosKonay Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Will the transit of the stairwell be visible from below? That could be a great feature.. It will from the top of the stairs yes Plan is tunnel mouths each side so basically the mainline will pass through a tunnel - cross a scale 1km canyon - and re-emerge back into the 'real' model world Quote
BosKonay Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Of course now I'm looking at the plan, I'm contemplating cutting holes into the wall on the far left too (which opens into a storage end of the attic) which I could use to hide the curves........... Quote
Broithe Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Bridge across the stairwell - spiral down to 'civilisation'..? Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Stephen I'd love to see the look on your wife's face when you tell her your going to cut holes in her wall Quote
BosKonay Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Rofl shhhh. That's the only concern allright Quote
Hunslet 102 Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Stephen, the operating potential for your layout is fantastic, looking forward to further progress over the winter. Are you still updating your thread on RM Web also? Quote
BosKonay Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Cheers will maintain the thread there too alright I'm 6 months in now, albeit a two month summer break, so I'm hoping by Christmas to have all the track actually down and functional! Quote

BosKonay Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 lol nice one I turned my back today for a minute and platforms appeared!! Only 'plonked' at the moment, with a bit of stock for clearance tests, so don't mind the old bump or ripple and an overview Quote
BosKonay Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Here is a 'mock up' of the freight and coach sidings reversed.... Quote
201bhoy Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Quite a variety of stock, especially towards the end The platforms looks great You'll have to get out a few full rakes now Quote
irishrail123 Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Very nice! Those platforms look spot on!!! Quote
BosKonay Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Stock variety is one of my vices I've a huge BR blue collection, lots of LMS steamers, some TGV's, many boxes of Thomas and friends .... :) I want to clean and paint the platform gaps, and level them off nicely to set them off right, then might even look at ballast / concreting in the terminus roads so I can bed the platforms in properly Quote
Garfield Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 ...then might even look at ballast / concreting in the terminus roads so I can bed the platforms in properly Everard Junction uploaded a handy tutorial on adding concreted areas last week: [video=youtube_share;-BihTpFUSGM] Quote
BosKonay Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Was only watching it last night - I also watched Al Mayo's one using Woodland Scenics 'smooth it' - I might give both options a try in different areas and see how they go! Quote

Just watched the Al Mayo video... that Smooth-It stuff looks pretty good! Love the shades and textures he achieved. Quote

(I've never been to Russia or Belarus, I just got them in Berlin ) I doubt I have your numbers of stock though Quote
BosKonay Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 A bit of variety is as good as a holiday I'm hoping to get some detailing added to the terminus and the platforms bedded down and the Shed roads laid and wired this week. All credit to Glenderg for the platforms - absolute stunners as always :) Quote
Glenderg Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 The platforms look tiny in place, all 24 feet of em! Good god, how big is that layout!!! Don't forget that little bit of charcoal on the tops to weather them nicely, and then paint up around 300 little plastic people to populate it. An evenings work, eh? Quote
heirflick Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 beautiful job the layout Bos, glendery did a fab job on the platforms...the detail is superb! Quote
Retro Herbie Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 The platforms look class, love the site of the two car on the big empty platform just looks 'right' BTW i use smooth it all the time, a fantastic product. Quote
irishthump Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Jayzsus, those platforms look unbelievable! Quote
enniscorthyman Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Lovely stuff there, the 2600 looks fab. Quote
BosKonay Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Cheers lads - I'll try to post photos as I get jobs done - have another bunch of soldering and under board work with the motors to do, but I'll hopefully be able to use routes and actually shunt the yards and terminus very soon! Quote
BosKonay Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 (edited) After a great chat on the design with Glenderg the other day, I went back to the drawing board with the lower half of the plan. So, here's one version of the 'new' bottom left. The junction bottom right comes off the 'stairwell viaduct' and splits the track into a high level through station and a gentle 2% incline down to the under-terminus-fiddle roads. The radius of the curve is just a little more than 6 feet, and the space between the points for trains to stop is ample for a 9 foot train.... The double line down the incline will provide a nice sweeping scenic feature too, which can sit in a cutting at the bottom near the terminus, before entering an urban tunnel under the terminus board itself. The left hand corner then provides scenic space for a small town scene, maybe the archetypal bus depot, etc (ps: the cement terminus will be re-added in front of this again, shortly Edited September 7, 2012 by BosKonay Quote
BosKonay Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 And on the right hand side, a new Dock Branch is going in. The rear tracks will be hidden behind a scenic break in the corner, and the branch provides two long sidings, with dockside and a gantry crane at the end, which can both take a 9.5 foot train...
