It’s summer 1954, and a rare early colour photo, probably the first colour view of any train in West Kerry.

Gleaming Kenmare regular 170 has just returned from a major exam and its last ever repaint in Inchicore (or should that be 00) Works.

It’s on the Dugort goods today to run it in, and is seen ambling away, back towards Castletown West, with the morning departure. 

In other news, a combination of babysitting duties and daughter’s entire life of luggage stuffed into the layout room now, means more photoshoot and less progress on the layout, unfortunately. And I’m not getting younger…

With the layout inoperable at the moment due to a large amount of stuff stored temporarily in the layout room, I have to content myself with a few posed shots.

Over two ten-year gaps, we see the quieter midday train from Dugort Harbour to Castletown West.

First, a clean 170 departs one summer day in 1954.

 

Next, in summer 1964 we see the same service stabled a few hours before departure at the old cattle bank. The coach and van have yet to be repainted black’n’tan, but at least there’s a brand new 141 up front.

 

By 1974, it’s a single 121, brake standard and van. Here, the driver prepares to shunt the set to the platform.

It's All-Ireland day in 1965, and Kerry are all set (as usual!) for Croke Park. Two locomotives leave Dugort Harbour with five packed coaches. At Castletown West they will add on another six bogies and a dining car for the journey to Dublin. Unfortunately, today will see a three point win by Galway......

Not Dugort, but a steamy scene st a friend’s layout today. It’s 1959, and a UTA Jeep is visiting Dublin, seen here among three “Woolwich” types…

A shot taken from a moving car of the last train of the day passing Carrowmore Bog, in 1946, with a newly-outshopped 170 and a train of six-wheelers….

And it’s off to town in 1966…..only two passengers this morning, and they’re in the van sharing a flask of tea with Johnny the guard, while they discuss the great issues of the day, like whether Ed will get his car fixed by Tuesday, and what is to be done about Michael’s cow shed roof.

Meanwhile, Tom, alone in the cab, contemplates a job offer driving a post office van in Manchester, where his daughter lives…..

“Ye see, guard, there’s no-one here after seven in the evening. The door’s been crow barred open. Second time since August”

”Ah, shovels, crowbars, lamps…. probably Timmy’s bottles o’holy water, but sure ye know that!”

”I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that! Nice stuff, though, he got me a bottle too…”
